History

The 16th regiment of foot, raised in the county of Halland, was raised as several companies in the 16th century, though not in Halland. As the name suggests, the companies were raised in the regions called Västergötland and Dalsland. In 1615, Gustavus Adolphus II, king of Sweden, organized these separate units into one great unit consisting of three regiments, whereof the Västgöta-Dals was one. The men from the two counties would see action in several battles primarily against the German states and the Danish. Some of the most important engagements took place during the 17th century. In the Great Northern War, other important battles were fought with the 16th present.
