Sergeant at Arms
Hello Everyone!

I just started to play this mod but i was confused when i saw the difficulty to get an army... Every looter party is much too strong for my new little recruit. Can anyone help me? And it's realy boring if you need to start with training camp.

I hear ya man.  I had to import a character that had some money so I could recruit mercenary help.  But it IS totally worth it once you get it going, trust me.  A great mod with tons of cool stuff.

I found a way to get money : TOURNAMENTS. Hehe. I could hire much recruits and trained them now i'm working to take a castle

I had the same problem... here's what you do. You make your trainer skill to at least 3 or 4, then run around to find Nicholas (Lezalit) who also has 4 trainer skill. You do enough missions for lords of the faction you want to join later to get about 1-2 thousand Denars, then you recruit 20 or so recruits and wait in town until trainer brings them all up to level 2.

Once you get 20 recruits upgraded to level 2, you'll be able to defeat groups of 20 looters. Also, don't create skirmishers, archers are absolutely **** in this game, unless you use them in castles.

Also, recruit Jeremus, Deshavi, Marnid and Firentis along with Nicholas for some extra firepower.

If there were looters then it would be easy, but they aren't looters.  Anyway that is a good strategy though.  If you can level them up so they at least have a shield and some medium armor they would probably stand a chance.
Also I don't see how people win tournaments when they start out.  At least not with a brand new character.  Unless of course you have the damage turned way down I guess.  For me the bottom line is that this is a great mod and however you get started is fine, just get into it.  It's great

I can't even win tournaments now at level 22. The last tournament i joined, the first battle my team and i were on foot and we had bows and arrows... our enemies were fully armoured knights on horseback with jousting lances. It was impossible for my team to win.

If you're lucky enough to have a decent melee weapon and a horse in every round of the tournament, you'll win.

You guys do know that there are difficulty settings that can be temporarily brought down, right?

When i first downloaded this mod i tried turning the difficulty settings down as far as they go, but even then my army of Swadian recruits were getting demolished by scorchers. And honestly, once you get your set of troops to level 2 so that they are no longer peasants with pitchforks and actually have some armour and a spear, the game is very easy, even with the settings on normal.

I'm at a point now where i have a party size of 85. I compose my party entirely of infantry to make giving orders in battle a lot easier, and i have a core of around 40 elite Swadian halberdiers, myself and 4 other heroes, and the rest are just like Swadian militia and footmen, and with this army of 85 i beat the king of Vageirs with his army of 180 and took him prisoner with only 25 casualties.

The only hard part is really the start of the game, but once you have an army of 20 men at level 2, you work up from there, and it gets easier and easier.

actually dayve, i must disagree with you on this point, the archers are not **** at all, in fact the mainline of my army consists of rhodok archers, and i have about 20 rhodok crossbowmen, all i can say is that my boys can take down a fielded army of swadian cavalry, in fact my army makes a robin hood convention look like a bunch of guys with swords.

When I first began playing this mod, I had my ass handed back to me in less than 40 minutes. I heard of how difficult it was, so I din't pick any fights and only ever did the crappy low pay jobs that Lords gave me. Hell, I din't even recruit anybody, just so I could stockpile my cash. Then I went and recruited a large number of recruits (about 30ish), hired a companion, and spent the rest of my cash on better equiptment and food. Then I set out in hopes of finding a small looter party to beat ... and was promptly demolished by a gang of ridiculously strong bandits, who raped my troops, stole my best weapon and left me with about 50 denars. =(

Don't you just love L&R? My hart feels with pride when I read this kinda posts. Finally a game where you can get your ass kicked.

Now the game is getting hard for me. I took Daramug castle from the Vaegirs, lost 70% of my men in the battle, most of them the elite guys who had been with me from the start, and then requested the king of Swadia give the castle to me for my loyal service. He refused, so i defected and kept the castle for myself, then took Reyvadin as well. Now i have the Swadians to deal with, and their armies are tough as hell... those knights ride right through my tightly packed line of Vaegir pikemen and halberdiers as if they weren't even there.

Starting is not that hard even at full damage, it just requires a little bit more planning and care than native. For the people that are good at combat you can make fast money with tournaments (i tried and lost all money I had, lol)

For inepts like me that cannot win a tournament until the char is lvl 40+++ there is still hope. After loosing all my money trying the tournament way, I stole a few cows from some villages, killed them, sold the meat and used that money to start my trading career. Once I got enough money, hired a few companions, bought nice equipment for all of us, and hired recruits in villages. That was enough to fight the weakest bands and start training recruits, now i have a nice band with some elite soldiers (still small but I'm making a name in Calradia)

If even this way is hard, just trade for a little longer so you get money for a few mercenaries (if that still doesn't work, then you will be better playing chess)

P.S.: by the way, hi to all (my 1st post in forums )

well...i agree that the settings of L&R are difficult than "native", but it's acceptable.

i started my game at lv1 without import char. and now i got 1 town and 3 castles for my own kingdom.

Here are my steps
1) Gain lv at training ground and arena

2) Work for the guild master and lords to gain money+exp, and hire companions during
the journey.

3) Recruit some soldiers from villages, then kill outlaw/sea riders near the coast of Nord empire.
(I used to ask all the freshman stay behind and charge the enemy by myself. :lol:;
I did not called my companions and mercenary cavalry join the attack until i elimate 1/2 - 1/3 enemy on the battlefied...well,i only hire a few mercenary cavalry, and spend most of my money to upgrade the equipments so i don't want to lose any of them)

4) Join Nord empire and chasing for TOURNAMENTS and enemy Lords from town to town.

5) I find a town that was less defensive after besieged by another empire, so i conquer it and ask my king to give it to me.( Remember to save the game before your king make a decision if you do not want to rebell yet. However, if you already got 1 town/castle on your hand, your king will never give anymore fief to you)

6) I leave most of my well-trained man to protect the town, then recruit much more soldiers and train them.

7) I rebell after i have over 200 man.

P.S.: my 1st post as well XD and i am not a native speaker, so pls fogive me if i make any  grammatical mistake
