So I've been thinking. With Bannerlord confirmed for 2016, wouldn't it be a good idea to implement WebM replaying capabilities on these forums? Bannerlord would in my opinion benefit greatly from giving the community the ability to share their short videos along with audio. These videos could be anything from ebin multiplayer killstreaks, cool new features from the singleplayer and showcasing new mods. With this in mind, I don't know much about WebM apart from their great quality, so I don't know if they would somehow tax the forum servers, so with this in mind, maybe limit posting WebMs to on-topic boards?

Anyway, from my years of being here, the forums with Janus in command seem to have always kept up to date on the latest tech, so I reckon its time to catch up on this frontier as well. Discuss.

Personally, I'd love it.
But like with the YouTube implementation, the question is if the forum code can handle it, if it's secure and lightweight and if it can't then it is out of Janus' hands.

Also, where would it be uploaded? imgur? IIRC one can do so over there, right?

- I think the security bit might be the biggest issue there
- I don't think imgur keeps any kinds of sounds in their webms
- It shouldn't add much load to the forum servers, unless the videos would be hosted on it

Though for now, what's wrong with shoving the videos on youtube and using the [youtube] tags?

I've even played with the idea of making a userscript which'd embed any linked webm files, plus some thought into extending TWim to accept 'em too. Though the last bit hasn't got much further than a thought or two, as the forum so far doesn't accept showing them.
Would also help with the kitten keys thread and such, with ~5MB webm files instead of 50MB gifs.

What do you mean about security? Someone posting screamers or child porn or something like that? I'd imagine that they'd just get handled the same way as pictures and gifs do.

Also about the uploading, can the TW image uploader handle WebMs?

What she said. Also, I think they might've ironed out most known kinks, but some of the new html5 tags (due to poor implementation) could have been used to execute scripts in the guise of video/audio/svg etc, feeding data to a third-party server or injecting stuff into the page it's loaded in. And other stuff like that.

But still, hell of a lot better than allowing flash video embedding.

They're like better quality, bigger gifs. And IMO perfect for stuff where a video is overkill, much like gifs can be used right now.

Wilfully ignoring funny stuff and "funny" stuff here.

WebM ARE videos. So you're saying you should use videos when videos are overkill!

Though when/if they are added, there needs to be decisions to be made. Should they autoplay or autobuffer? (Though I'd hope that's a unanimous no.) If they should be set to autoloop? (Which would probably a no for game footage things(?) but for cute cats, basically the 'gif replacers' probably should, to keep in style with most of the animated gifs out there). And if they should take the dimensions of the source file or if they should be a fixed width, if you can fullscreen 'em, will you need any custom controls for 'em, if so, should you need to be able to customise it, what to do as fallback for browsers which don't support it (mobile ones, for example). And probably few others I can't come  up with right now. Decisions, decisions!

And as far as TWim supporting it... It's a bit of a decisions thing too. The server upstream is limited, so it definitely couldn't handle a 1920x1080 60fps without the bitrate going down the ****hole or waiting a minute to play each second of the video. So I'd need to limit it... somehow. Re-encoding every video uploaded is out of question, they do limit the cpu use on it. This is what causes some images on TWim not being resized, doing the same thing for a video would be far, far worse.

Well, as funny as it sounds, I think 4chan has done it right. On default, you need to click on the webm to buffer and play it, and they have limited the quality of the webms so you cant upload 9 trillion x 10 webms for example.

They don't. IMO, webms are basically high quality lengthy gif replacers. I'd say shunt videos with sound to youtube, and support webms (security concerns permitting) without audio.

WebM is a cool new format, certainly, though widespread browser and platform support is still not quite there yet (getting close). And as mentioned, it is indeed a full video format with audio support, it's just becoming fairly commonly used with no audio on some sites as a royalty-free and better compression rate replacement for animated GIFs.

I will be considering how (and indeed whether) to add support for posting them along with other HTML5 video formats here on the forum. No promises, though.

Any update?
