Imperial Legionaries too good?

Small topic tangent, but am just wondering...in threads like this, I see many statements like, "Unit X has worse armor than Unit Y".

Somebody kindly extracted them and posted online:

v1.3.0 https://skulldrinker.com/troops.e1.3.0.json

Important thing to notice is that units does not use stats of the armor they are wearing. Their armor values are hard coded. Although they do seem to correspond with what they have equipped. Unit might have different sets and those seems to be picked randomly when game spawns unit. Keep that in mind when viewing units in encyclopedia.

I dunno about whether Legionaries are necessarily lacking in killing power or not, but they tend to compete extremely well against other infantry regardless. Makes it hard for Sturgia to really stand out, while making infantry centric factions like Battania feel a little weak.

Menavliatons, like all 2h infantry in the game can be absolutely lethal if you keep them behind your shield wall. Otherwise they're be helpless against arrows.

Wait a minute. So you telling me that an Oathsworn only looks frail on paper? Because when I compare their ranger mail to the highland merc armour that wildling wear, the latter blows them out of the water. And yet Oathsworn are supposed to be Battania's bulwark.

I am telling you that it's the hard coded stats that matter. They might or might not correspond to the visual representation of the unit that you see in the the game. I suspect that stats do more or less correspond with what you see those units wearing, but I did not go and check every unit. If you want to know stats of the unit, use links I gave.

As for Batanian oathsworn and wildlings, the former have about 10 more head armor while later about 10 more body armor.

Questions for people testing - does Wolf Head extend the head hitbox? It has more amour, but is also huge.

If that was the case then changing armor in the equipment sets would do nothing. It very much does.

Meh, imma go mod the crap out of them now. That Kilt over Leather Plate suit looks beefier and more worthy of Oathsworn.

Oh and I'm giving Battania archers and taking away some cav, because why not.

Good question. I was wondering about it as well. Extends to all large helmets, like bear head helmet that is even bigger then the wolf one. It also extends to some large shoulder pads like bear skins.

It does nothing other then changing visuals. I posted links to the data, you have it there black on white. Armor values are hard coded.

You know you can check the files in the game folder without third party links, right? These values aren't in the game NPC files. Units have appearance, upgrade paths, skills and equipment sets. They don't have armor values. I guess the guy running the site pulls the values for armor from spitems.xml and adds them to the json file for your convinience. They could be hardcoded somewhere outside the xml files but then you wouldn't be able to add new units to the game just by editing the files, which you can do.
The upper screenshot is legionaries fighting butt naked veteran warriors. The lower screenshot is the same matchup but veteran warriors have their default equipment sets.

Why evryone hates the Legionaries? they're not "too good", it's about tactis on baberlord battles. I have used many units fighting them and it's all about hit where it hurts. An the same time on my main save my legionaries and i sometimes has a hard go during battles, even not against the other empire. So the Legions are fine, let them be and get accostumed to the game and learn how to play. If you're going tier 1-2 against higher units then you're asking for slaughter. Get professional soldier tier 3- tier 4 then you see a match

They conquered calradia. They are SUPOSED to be better than everyone else. (Not speaking only as Roman lover), but what brought down the Empire was their leaders, not a bad army or legions. But incompetence of bad generals or politicians who didn't fight the rel enemy, the barbarians

Ah, quite informative....thanks for posting.

I mean this relative to other t5 faction infantry. Legionaries are just straight up one of the best infantry (Although CZII's vids with Veteran Warriors gives me hope), and not in the 'best line holder' sort of way. Right now they just match up too well against majority of t5s in the game, even if said infantry were supposed be specialty elements of their factions.

Compared to their contemporaries, Legionaries are not necessarily meant to be amazing warriors, but right now they might as well be.

Yep, hruza is wrong. The XML really does matter.
