Icons

So I am turning a bunch of images into icons (creating a desktop theme with a bunch of Pokemon related items; don't judge me), but although the images look smooth, when I save them as .ico files they look a bit jagged. I have downloaded other icons that look both smooth in the image and on the desktop, but when I do the conversion manually (via GIMP), I get this:

iconhelp.png

I am not sure if this is due to the nature of the image or something technical that can be fixed. Any way I can do this better?

That's weird, might be related to ico.
You can't change the icon if the image type is a PNG?
I did this ones but the external programs allows both ico, and png.

Presuming it can save the alphatransparency properly (might save the alpha pixels with black background..?), would pay to make an .ico which contains several different resolutions of the icon, so the OS doesn't have to do its apparently inferior method of resizing. Resize the png in gimp to desired size, then include that icon in the .ico file as well.

(No idea if gimp can do that, but there're plenty of programs which can make multi-res icons)

Well, if it were a .dds I'd say to save with mipmaps, but...

Try what J said. If it works just like mipmapping, it'll be like that. Maybe erasing the edges just a little (like 50%) and/or blurring them will solve it in an indirect way.

You can also try saving it at .ico resolution by yourself, to make the corrections on the proper size already.

All the images I have include that, whether it be from personally doing it or from the source, so that is not the problem. I tried the resizing, but it only helped slightly.

EDIT: So I downloaded a slightly different version of that image and it now works fine. Still not sure what caused the jagginess on that one though.
