Hey ho.

I´m new to this awesome (and soon even more awesome i hope!!) game and have been playing for a day or so. What I´m wodering is how to hire heavier troops right away instead of having to level up some damn farmers or militia. Do I have to rise in ranks on either side of the war to do this?

Ps. I searched the forum about this but found nothing answering my question.

I think it is not possible, not without mods. A good way to get mounted warriors is to attack enemy prisoner trains.

Horseback warriors suck! they charge straight off and get stuck in a group of enemies and just end up getting killed cause their horse can't move. They don't move very fast anyways. I had 3 caravan guards yesterday and they all died and EVERY battle. And thats just against river pirates.

Wait till you get like 20 knights. It's a blast to keep them up on top of a tall hill and make them charge into the enemy ranks just as the enemy starts climbing the hill..

True, but you usually end up losing a handful knights in every battle (or all of them when the enemy is strong). That's why I prefer ranged troops (except on the rare occations when I get hit by one of their stray arrows )

Ranged troops are annoying in the extreme, they're unruly bordering on suicidal. They practically never follow orders and even when they do, they seem to forget them in a few minutes. On the other hand, it's relatively easy to keep your knights alive if you take good care of them, although I must admit there are often one or two casualties in a battle that just can't be prevented. That's why you take surgery skill, then hope for the best.

i use stones. usually flat stones that you can throw hard. they really sting when they hit. i hit this pirate with a rock and you just know it's gonna leave a mark.

you know if you keep your caravan guards from charging solo, they'll live longer. let the enemy come to you. you swarm the enemy. there are threads with tips on the care and feeding of cavalry. look at them.

This is probably the first time a finn used that sentence. I guess that's what Cypress Hill does to you.

I have no problems with my knights. I have 20 knights, about a dozen horseman and a few skirmishers and I can take a decent sized group of Dark Knights and hunters with no losses to my knights at all. I will lose a few of the lower level guys though.

I have the battle size set to medium and I have put some points into tactics though, so that could be the difference.

They really need to add the possibilty to hire HEAVIER (mounted, ranged all kinds) troops right away if you can pay the price. Leveling up all these scumsucking footmen and peasants is really annoying.

:???:

if you really want to, download the editor and switch the hire unit of the tavarnkeepers. i think that is kinda cheap though, because you don't pay THAT much for a top-tier unit. maybe armagan can fix this? anyways, i would also like high-level hiring to be part of the standard game.

Hmm, if I tell my 15 sharpshooters to hold position they will, unless the enemy get too close, in which case they'll draw swords and defend instead. This is a problem if you place them at the top of a cliff since they'll be unable to get back up.

Knights are great. Use follow me and charge first. Use lance and axe to cleave a bloody path through the middle of the enemy pack thinning and spreading them out a bit and your knights will do hyperspeed mop up.

Wall of knights is the fastest way to end a battle.

Sharpshooters are great but they don't spread out enough to shoot and don't clump together enough to melee. Without proper formations, knights are more effective.

Er, I think Worbah knew that, he was just making a joke.....

The best way to get mounted units in the game currently is to to just get the dam militia/footman, and level them up. This can happen very quickly if you have a high trainer skill, and if you take your group into a series of battles against low level opponents. Even if you just tell your men to stay on a hill while you single-handedly kill everyone, your men will still get XP simply for being there.

I do think that the player should be able to recruit high level charcters from the start, although you might have to earn favor with on side of another first.

I'd really like to be able to hire higher level units at will. Maybe they could cost more upkeep than "homegrown" troops, as they're not as loyal and just working for the money. However, the best way to get high level troops is to put a few points into training, get some peasants, then just rest at an inn for a week or so. Its kind of cheating though, but oh well.

Yeah, it seems that a decent training skill is an ABSOLUTE must and to always keep room for some scumsucking peasants/footmen in case your knights get whacked down. I´d still like to be able to buy a knight for like a 1000 gold. Maybe this should go in the suggestion forum? :???:

I don't get everyone moaning about how their mounted troops are slaughtered. I run at 103% difficulty (would be higher, but the framerate suffers horribly) and rarely get even an unconscious Knight. Casualties among lower ranks (Men-at-arms, footmen, militia) are higher (say, one every five battles), but still not approaching the catastrophic level implied by the posts I've seen.

The biggest drain on my troops is when the Counts requisition them.

It's seriously not too bad.

Go raid enemy prisoner trains. I hit them every chance I see and new troops come in at well over twice casualty rate.

The units you rescue are 3rd/4th tier units anyhow which become knights or whatever easily.

What's everyone so concerned about?
