First, build up an army. Then if you want, you can raze some villages to make your controversy high, though this is optional. Then capture a castle, and request the king to reward it to you. Two conditions will appear after sometime:
1. King grants the fief to you, and you cannot take it away. Nothing can be done.
2. King will grant it to someone else, but he will offer you some money compensation.
When condition two appears, you will be presented an offer to renounce him, along with 'renounce him and keep your fiefs with you'. When you keep your fiefs, you will hold that settlement as long as you want.
These answers are good but i think the king usually give you the fiefs you have conquered. You need to have a lot of controversy, so that the king don't truste you. I mean that he thinks that you may desert with the fief to another calriadian faction.
Rebel from your current King, and then send an emisary to the new fraction saying that you wish to join and put yourself as vassal in that kingdom. I think you could visit the king in person to put yourself as vasal under the new King. Thats the only way I can think of...
