As the title says i think i may know what the dev team (mount & blade team), wanted to do.
If you talk to any skald/troubadour, and ask what are the benefits of marrying, he will mention that the greater families may have at some point mingled with royalty, meaning that it was meant to be as a way to get to overthrow the king and take the place yourself
My guess is while they were developing it, they saw it was a bit silly, since no 5th cousing-brother-in-law could truly overthrow a king and instead kept that away and sticked to the claimants to replace current rulers and of course independent kingdom
I know its a general m&b warband thing but i thought to share this here since i asked a question a while ago about the benefits of marriage in large families
That also explains why the king has the option of "lasting alliance with your house".
There could had been more ideas into it, maybe having children who could have a better claim, but i guess it was too complicated, just a thought.
