I just lay claim to the HoboThrone in a noble effort to get Gabeed's attention.

...for example, how is saying someone is whining any worse than saying they are *****ing? They both mean the same thing, and yet one is punishable in certain situations...
Whining is a word for complaining. When you say someone is '*****ing'(forgive my language  ), it suggests that said person is a b****, and is doing what they find natural.
The problem is: It's a derogatory term that means specifically, "female dog." In essence, you are calling someone an animal, and even more, you are being a misogynistic fool, saying that women are by necessity lower than men.

That is why we do not do that.

True, but his other example is valid.. Where I see that using it as an insult, like calling someone a piece of **** is different then going OH ****... If I were to say OH POO, it would automatically be acceptable? They do have the same meaning. And if crap is considered a swear word then OH CRAP is unacceptable as well?

Frankly, the only way to know if they are unacceptable is to know their origins.

I'm merely pointing out the mutual exclusion between swearing and being Christian.  I don't really have an issue with people watching their language in a server, though the concept of a "Christian server" for a game where you're hacking and stabbing people with medieval weaponry strikes me as an odd juxtaposition.

Edit: Really?  7 new replies?

The verb '*****ing' in today's culture very specifically means complaining/whining, which itself has a negative connotation. Calling someone a ***** no longer means a female dog; it has come to mean someone who complains, whines, or is generally a jerk. When someone calls someone else a *****, they aren't saying, 'X is a complete female dog. I hate him,' or aren't usually. You must come to terms with the fact that the meaning of a word changes over time; otherwise, the word '******', which is widely recognized as a derogatory term for a homosexual, would mean a 'pile of sticks'.

You can't argue technicalities with the English language.  There are varying levels of intensity that are contextually assigned to all words.  Connotation means more than denotation in a lot of cases.

Christianity isn't a list of "OKAYSTUFF" and "ZOMGEVIL", of course.  In a lot of areas, we draw our own lines based on our convictions.  Communication is everything, so in that area most of us draw the line way back.  I am the only Bible many people will ever read.  My tongue should be clean.  It's very hard to live up to, but I take it quite seriously.

EDIT: Interesting.  Socks is arguing contextuality in favor of swearing, and I'm arguing contextuality against it.

The way I see it, the problem isn't in the words uttered, but on the circumstance. What is being judged, when someone criticizes the swearing, is not the words themselves, but not having enough restrain to cope with the situation that made you angry, and say a word that is considered a curse. The anger, or the lack of self restrain is what I think religious people, (where I include myself, although my tolerance to frustration is something I should improve) judge.

Do I mean that curses outside a situation of anger or frustration are meaningless and should be ignored? Well, not exactly... Being perfectly calm but expressing a word that usually denotes anger is not being angry, so according to my proposition it shouldn't be considered. But I'll let people make their own arguments for that one

This thread has switched from being a claim to the Hobothrone to a rant about how poorly some PRT members follow their own rules.

Some? i would change that to MOST. If they wont follow one of the most basic rules how on earth did they get into clan and why do they even remain in the clan? The failure of members not following the rules is also a failure of the leaders for not enforcing them.

As for swearing, who cares? People can express themselves in any manner they please, whether or not that is dictated by a culture or religion. A person or a group cannot determine how another person has to act.

ah i knew you were going to say that, i was wondering whether or not i should add the part of "in a situation where the group does not have power".

Yet still, while its true PRT can do whatever they want with their server, they will not be able to stop people being 'themselves'.

Er....

Is this next hobo thread?.....

aswell as what scipio said in early post saying keep it in your fourms?

that is all.

Yes, really.  And now I will digress, before you manage to destroy what may be the only religion-discussing thread on the internet that hasn't ended in chaos.
