I suppose if you'd retexture the 'stone' skin, it could be made to look like a ball lightning or somesuch.

You guys remember the wizard fight in Fellowship of the ring when the two senile dress wearing guys slapped each other around with telekinetic blast type spells? you could basically make a wizard staff with a very long reach (what is the maximum?). this worked atleast in Morrowind.

How about changing the throwing axe to the torch, that might look like a fireball if you squint.
Actually, if you could somehow get the fire animation on its own without the wooden torch, you could have it thrown like stones.
Maybe you could even add the fire to arrows for flaming arrows.
