I hate losing tier 6/7 troops...

It takes so long to train troops to tier 7 (which is good because they are so good), so I always feel really disappointed when I lose some in battles. Worst fear is always when fighting those Khergit Black Knights which really kick arse, or Khergit and Rhodok castles or cities.

Any ideas how to protect them better?

Better tactics
It isn't much to say here. Except things like don't send your archers against cavalry charge. It's bad idea to send shieldless units against archers up the hill. And so on and so on. Try some strategy/tactic guides here.

Lol thanks.

I've been playing this game for a long time now but every time I start again I lose them high tier troops over and over again.  Really freaks me out when I try to set up a formation and those Khergit Warg Riders mow down my guys before I even had a chance to set them up.  :???:

Surgery and extra surgeons.

Yes, I have a surgeon at level 10 which is great. But in a battle with +250 soldiers on a map still two or three of my tier 6/7 troops buy the farm. My archers aren't a real problem, in fact. I use the Rhodok crossbow pals, they rarely die because of their large shields they use in close encounters. They also avoid melee and just try to use their main ranged weapon. It's the cavalry I lose (Swadian Barons) despite of their high HP. Takes so long to train just one Baron.

Would infantry survive longer? I never tested it because in my games I mostly relied on cavalry and archers.

Well, you could try Rhodok or Nord infantry. They are pretty badass. Nords, not Rhodoks

I love you.

Not to lose your very-high-tier cavalry, a simple thing: Never use them to attack a castle, and make them charge after your main cavalry on field battles.
Oh, and a good thing is that you take a blunt weapon when fighting Lords. Try to stun one or two of their very-high-tier units, to recruit them later...

I put tier 7 troops into their own category and name them "Bodyguards" or something and make them follow me around everywhere. It increases their life expectancy. But this has more to do with my general play style of being more of a commander than a grunt on the front lines. The same goes for companions.

I know that feel.  This morning, I sieged one of those castles with the bad pathing (I think one of the Sarranid ones) and lost about 5 of my Condotierri.  Meanwhile, the other I5 Nords I had with me went almost unscathed.

Damn near wanted to cry.

Yeah, I do that already all the time. Prior to such fights I gear up with the Horseman's Mace and before the battle really starts, I ride out and tan the enemy's tier 7 hides myself.

Good idea with the extra category. I'll try this out, putting the tier 7 units in a seperate category. Then throw the rest of my army at the wolves, while letting the tier 7 charge some moments after them.

I lost one t7 Rhodok crossbowman just because he decided to stand in middle of battlefield waiting for cavalry charge...I immediately cheated one new in

My siege condotieri seem to love going all melee on sieges. And getting 18 throwing axes in their armets.

There are some castles in which you MUSTN'T bring high tier units.
There's one north of Kelredan castle, Knudarr, I think, that makes you enter in the castle and literally be surrounded by enemies. At close range. And it's mostly owned by nords. That means you become axehogs or something like that.

Add Jamayyed Castle to that list too, which is the one I was talking about earlier.  It's the one where the castle is a mile away, and the siege engine takes like 10 minutes to get there.  Yes, there is one solitary ladder, but you have to lead the guys up it and the pathing is wonky.

I'm over a year into the game and I haven't managed to train a single tier 7 Swadian Baron myself, though I have 50+ of the tier 6 units in my all cavalry army (Would have had a lot more but I lost 50 something of the tier 5 troops in the final battle with the Rhodoks). I have freed a number of them from enemies or bandit parties, but they seem to die just as easily as my tier 4 Ecuyers.

I've actually stopped bothing with tier 7. If I ever get any I just put them in my garrison until i've saved up enough for them to actually be useful. Tier 6 troops aren't as hard to get but are still just as vulnerable. You have to find a balance between using your high tier troops but also preserving them by a) Putting them lower down in your party list and b) Assigning them to a different group in battle so you can command them individually

I find the best way to keep the higher tier troops alive though is to mix them up with a larger proportion of lower tier troops to act as cannon fodder.

I've already trained two in my lifetime
But remember, t6 units are pretty badass as well. And I trained lots of those.

Also, if you have problems with cavalry, you can try Manhunters. They are VERY overpowered.
Leifdin 说:
Also, after I checked, I realized that their skill is too high. According to level, slaver chief should be t6 unit, but he has higher skill than some t7 units. Slave driver has roughly similar skills as Vaegir C4! Slaver chief 312 one-handed and 270 two-handed weapon skill, while Vaegir C7 has 268 for one handed and 282 for polearms. Sarranid C7 has 302 for both, Khergit 299/266, Swadian 208/316. All C7 units are level 40-42, while slaver chief is level 34.

And the Slaver Chiefs instantly knock down every infantry they touch... So they are quite extreme, unfortunately.

Yes, they are awesome. But I don't like an army of pachyderms running around the battlefield, they just look so...funny.  Elephant same size as a horse...

They should be this:

We will see what the bannerlord engine is capable of

If Bannerlord is as mod-friendly as Warband.. talking about opening up a whole new can of worms.
