I few ideas about armor.

I'd say - add 2 extra slots (or even 3) for 'light' armor.
After all, in RL, armor is usually worn OVER padded vests or skull caps (liners)... And having to wear EITHER padded cap or a metal helm is unrealistic and annoying.
Also, (that kinda stems from that) what about armors having different soaks for different damage types?
Like, leather armor would be nice against bash (cause it's, in fact, rather inflexible in RL) and cut, but will be pierced easily, same for padded armors. Cloth armors (those that are flexible) should give only a bit of protection agaist slash.
Chain armors should be godly against cut, but bashing damage should get right thru. And not all that good against pierce - chainmails were used agaist 'antipersonnel' slashing arrows, not AP ones. To an AP arrow, chainmail as a lot of interconnected holes .
And plate, of course, should be good against pretty much anything.
This way, you can nerf all all piercing damage, up slashing damage - and have realistic and balanced situation.
Or it's like that already (it's rather obvious, I think), only not visible to players?

Hi Balor, it's nice seeing you here.

You are right right about the points you raised. However there is no end to making the damage model more and more realistic. At some point you need to stop and make do with the model you have.

You can think that you wear either a padded cap OR both a padded cap and a metal helm.

*blinks* Really? How? There is only one slot for it... so I assumed it's impossible. You can merge them somehow?
But, I guess, it's understandable that you'll want to add more pressing things first.
Well, anyway, if you'll have free time and desire to add more stuff - feel free to implement my idea

Adding a few more armour slots, even just by adding pauldrons and gauntlets, would create a lot more possibility for variation to armour sets.

It's unnecessary to use a 'armor over padding' system because you can treat the armor ratings of the armors themselves as a simplification of this.

Meaning padding would give you, say +5, and chainmail would give you +15, 5 of which is 'considered' padding underneath, instead of you having to equip both kinds of armor.

Hmm... I don't exactly understand what you meant by that.
And besides, padded armor is +10.
Anyway, you should look at how armor system was done in Evil Islands. It's one of the best - and you could have made your own armor!
