The Real Story Behind The Name Fidel Lagstro
Mount&Blade:Warband was the first PC game I ever played after moving to California where I finally had internet good enough to realistically play a game online, but not having any experience with PC games or English terminology for anything PC related, I didn’t know what “Ping” meant, and I just assumed that higher ping was better, so the first servers I ever joined were Chinese servers where I had 400+ ping, and obviously, playing M&B: Multiplayer was a ****ty experience for obvious reasons, so I ended up searching for reasons why warband multiplayer was so bad, and I found out that my problem was called “lag” and that I am actually supposed to look for the least amount of ping possible… so I went back in and found the most populated server with the least ping, and the server I found was POM, where I had ~78 ping at the time.
At the time, my name was still the default “New_Player” so I decided I needed to make a new name, so I thought about what it should be, and the first thing that came into my mind was that I was playing a medieval game, and I should give my name a medieval element , so I decided on “Sir” and then I needed the actual name, so the next thing that came to mind were the movies I watched of King Arthur and the Round Table, and the name that came to me was Sir Lancelot, but I didn’t want to just copy the name, so I combined the name with the first problem I experienced in Warband which was “Lag” so what I produced with that combination was “Sir Lagalot”. I got some praise for the name in-game for it being a somewhat funny name and how well it applied to me since my ping was generally higher than everyone else’s, but even more so because I also tended to have massive long lasting lag spikes as well, so it just added legitimacy to my name.
After about a year or so into the game, many things had happened, I was already in the competitive scene, I had joined wK and had passed my Squire stage, and became a full-fledged West Knight. Smurfing started becoming very popular and common, and some of us in wK started coming up with new names for the sake of it, but still keeping the wK tags on, for example the ever so famous “wK_Presence” (Calamity). I decided to make one myself for the sake of fun, and I had done it the same day some random on POM had called me a “tyrannical archer”, so I tried to come up with a name that made use of that, so I started looking up some lists of tyrannical dictators I could base my name off of, and taking into consideration my Hispanic heritage, I ended up deciding on making something out of Fidel Castro since I liked the name and it is something anyone in the US should have been able to recognize. I needed to link it in some way to my old name, and of course, it would be the reason I created my previous name, which was Lag, so I combined these in the best way I could, and came up with my current glorious name "Fidel Lagstro", which was praised the second I entered the server that same day, and is still praised by new people I meet every day, with the exception of Rake, because he is a jealous infidel, lacking in all forms of creativity and originality.
Since the name Fidel Lagstro was praised by many and I liked it a lot myself, I used it for more than just that one day, and after playing under it for a while, I kind of forgot that I had created it as a smurf and Achilles asked me why I hadn’t gone back to Sir Lagalot… and it made me think, should I keep on using Fidel Lagstro, or should I go back to Sir Lagalot? After thinking about it for a few minutes, I came up with a solution, I would keep whichever was the most unique, so I asked the ever so wise google if anyone else had ever used either of these names before… and alas… the results were... many people had started using the name Sir Lagalot around the same time I had, but as for Fidel Lagstro… it didn’t show up at all, it had never been used before… so the winner was clear, Fidel Lagstro was the most unique and it is the one I have decided to keep since then.
