How to start?

Do you want an easy start or a quick start? Pick one.
Easy start -
Solo looters until you gather enough money to hire some merc horsemen or cavalry. Free manhunters from bandits and level them up. Now simply camp around ransom brokers. Lots of money, quite a lot of renown and soon enough you have an army on your hands. Your companions will level up mostly by finishing quests, and bandit lair ones are quick and easy with good melee troops, and yield good rewards. If I want an easy game, I do that until I buy enterprises in all towns. You have money, renown and army when you finish.
Once you feel like it join Khergits, because Lancers are cheap, quick to train and really good. Don't go after castles yet, until you find something seriously tempting. In field battles you can get more renown and XP. Once you level yourself and your companions up it's mid game and the start is over.
Quick start -
Solo looters and then go after Sea Raiders with a long blunt weapon. Usually there is a ransom broker somewhere around Rivacheg, lots of cities for them to spawn. You can store loot in Rivacheg's chest, but even if not, you should have lots of money anyway. As long as you solo, the loot is good. One more trooper and it gets significantly worse. And renown goes down too...
Once you have enough of it gather companions and hire some mercs to help them a little. Now your goal is to level them up. Doing rescue the prisoner quests yields lots of rewards and you don't need an army for it so do those, you'll need relations for the next step. Get an army of some sort (train, hire, free prisoners and level them up - your choice) and join a faction. Use your relations with lords and ask them to help you in a siege. Take a city.
