How to remove companions

As far as I can tell there is currently no way to get rid of an unwanted companions in this DLC, I hope I am wrong cuz most of them suck. Anyone have any ideas?

on sandbox you are free to keep or send away any companion you want.

If you are doing storyline you will need to follow the quests until the conclusion.

I am playing the storyline mode, but even companions that are not associated with quest lines (a couple that I recruited just cuz I felt like it) seem to be forever stuck in my party.
