How to recolor textures . . . (I'm trying to learn)

Users who are viewing this thread

I just recently learned how to make new objects in the unofficial editor and edit their stats, but I was wondering how I can go about changing the textures. For example, as Lu Bu well knows, my character is modelled after Gandalf the White from the Lord of the Rings trilogy/movie and thanks to Lu Bu, my Gandalf now has a white robe and will soon have a white hood. I'm feeling a little guilty nagging Mr. Bu to make me one thing after another so I want to learn myself . . .

My current project is to make Shadowfax, the white stallion that Gandalf rode on. I can make a horse just fine with the name Shadowfax and will very good stats, but I have no clue how to make it all white. I used a Courser model, so the horse is white-ish, but I want Shadowfax to be completely snow white with no saddle/bridle/or any other horse riding equipment. SO......

What would I have to do to go about doing this? Thanks to everyone in advance.

i dont know how to texture, but i'd guess you would open it in photoshop, and either add your own texture, or drag the whire parts of the hair onto the saddle area to overlap it. i cant give you any suggestions beyond that

Just to clarify, I am using BRFview to view the horse meshes. I cloned the Courser mesh in the hopes that it would be easier to redo because it's already white. I exported the cloned mesh to the desktop, and beyond that . . . I'm lost. I don't think it will open in Photoshop, but I'll try.

BTW, your avatar is beyond hilarious.

EDIT: Nope, Photoshop can't read the sucker.

also, i believe there was a thread based off of this somewhere, NoobSaibot had it on his tutorial i think

!!!! Is that a geniune Garfield cartoon?!? That Jim Davis is getting a little crude  That's funny though, haha.

EDIT: I think I'm in way over my head. . .

To edit the texture, you need to edit the .dds file in your textures folder in your m&b directory. If you don't already have a plugin .dds photoshop plugins

I suggest that you change the steppe horse or sumpter horse texture instead of the courser because the courser has a saddle that is modeled on and that can't be changed yet. Anyways, once you open whichever texture you want to edit in photoshop, just edit it like you normally would. Sorry I can't help much with the art stuff, I'm really not a great artist myself.

Hope this was helpful.

Haha. If you want to add a new horse, cloning one of the exitings was a good idea, now you must hex edit materials and texture_name files so that the new texture for the new horse is used.
After that editing the texture to your liking of course!

There was a video tutorial for that, which is still correct i think, even if there are one or two things which can be done easier.
