well, after nearly a month of struggle with this ****, i've finally figured out how to create, texture, and skin meshes in 3ds max, and then get them into mount and blade.
you need to download fragmotion.
then with 3ds max 9, export as .FBX, and import the FBX into fragMotion.
all of the skinning data will be preserved, but the bones will be renamed, and there might be some extra blank objects like lights, and the damn particle views seeping through the cracks.
in the "skeleton" tab, you need to remove the extra objects, and rename the bones, from Model::1, Model::2 etc. into 1, 2, 3 and such.
then you can export into HL2 SMD, and off ye are.

You can't simply put a body armor item into a .obj and .dds and then get it ingame. You have to "skin" armors. He's talking about bones and SMD files.

I'm pretty damn sure he's talking about skinning. And I think he tried to make a tutorial, which is very nice of him.

I never said that.
Bah, i'm just saying there is an easier way.
All i do is UV map it, save the texture as a .dds. And export the mesh as a .obj. Seperately.
And it works fine, there is just some options to trigger for it to work. But those options are saved after the first time you do it.
It's seems much simpler to me, so i think i'll stick to it.
If Dejawolf meant doing something completely else, then i misunderstood and i'm sorry.

knowing the process I understand what dejawolf is talking about, but again, why?

Now if you are saying you can import new skeletons into M&B with fragmotion, then
That would be awesome!

If you are talking about just getting your body armor into M&B, I've done it with the OBJ2SMD.exe thingie.  I think many of the new meshes are done that way.  This means you can do it with just Wings3D and any existing brf file with armor.

Not to diminish what you've found, but I'm hoping more exporing will lead to new animations or skeletons in the game.  I could bring in my 4 armed daemon!
