This is a bit of a tip for people in .702 who don't want to cheat, but find that it takes forever to get money:

SLAVES!

Slavery doesn't take into account merchant skill, and each slave gives you 10 gold! That means that even if all you capture is 5 river pirates, you get 50 gold! Not to bad for the beginning of the game. Now all you need is a blunt weapon: I suggest a staff. It is fast, has excellent range, and if you really wanted to you could couch it. In addition, you can now use a shield with it.... I'm still on Day 1 but I have 500 gold already, not counting the equipment I've bought for myself. You can even put a second point in prisoner management if you want, so you will make 100 gold each trip back to zendar. Staffs can be expensive though, so I advise making some money in the arena first (which is also good because you will be able to level up and get point in athletics and power strike, both very useful when taking slaves)

I'm making 20 gold per slave, and making about 80% of my revenue off of constant slave runs. Are you sure you're making 10?

One of the slickest money sources I've found is questing, at least when it involves taking prisoners and bringing them to a count. Earlier today, six vaegir knight prisoners resulted in a payment of 1000 denars. Nice!

No you are right it's 20. I thought it was 20 but was feeling to lazy to check, so I lowballed it so as not to give people false expectations :)

Cheating doesn't count. If we were to count cheating, then basically the whole game would be easier cheating. Strategies always deal with the moral options, not the easy ways out :P

with the revised income scheme, my investments in the tournaments are very risky! Losing 30 pieces of silver now is like my left arm lopped off...

I was saving up for the jousting lance last game... happily mowing down pirates with my court lady using a bent staff. A 'david' of a pirate hurled his stone square between my eyes. Since i was charging downhill, i tooked 20+ points of hurting and everything went black. Lost a bunch of gold, my slaves train and band of towns folk.
OUCH...

The changes in .702 have made this game more challenging - especially with new terrain and cost/income changes.

I like it :-)

That's your problem, you were using the staff as a couched weapon :) Nothing wrong with that, but against river pirates it is more effective to use as a two-handed weapon, or a 1 handed with shield. You can just run backwards, and as they come into range of your longer weapon you give them a good wack. If they try to throw rocks at you, just raise your shield!

I was just fighting a group of Vaegir scouts with my crippled Steppe horse. Needless to say, I lost and lost my horse and 400 gold.

400 gold! That's two fricken' battles!

Yeah, I like it too :D

100% sure its 20.
Completing the river pirates quest requires defeating 25 groups of them. If you take 5 prisoners from every group, thats 2500 gold from completing the river pirates quest, plus the extra gold the Constable gives you, and anything you might loot from them.
2-3 stones in the head will knock a river pirate unconscious, so grab those stones after the battle and you're all set

Escorting caravans, both ones from the merchant, and any i see on the way. You also get a fair amount of expierrience this way, and can join any battles you see on the way, which means loot, whic means more money.

yup. with most of the economy rescaled 1:10, the slave trade got rescaled 1:5. imho, makes more sense this way: the slaves were useless (moneywise) in the previous reason. in 0.632 and 0.7 i used to use to fill up the slave slot with black khergit riders to speed up my party's ground speed :)

You have to be joking...

In the early game (0.632), slaves were a *huge* exploit. The income a low level character could gain from selling river pirates was massive compared to what he could make doing anything else.

Now that they're relatively woth double the price, it's absurdly benefitial to sell slaves. It's just far too easy money.

Granted, later on in the game it's not worth bothering with them. But at that stage, money isn't really much of a problem any more anyhow.

Would perhaps be better if differnt slaves had different values? perhaps to reflect their physical condition and/or clothing
