How to fight Vs melee hit spam?

Users who are viewing this thread

I dont know, maybe its just me, but enemy's with 1h swords and shields are so freaking fast
i block, they hit my shield like crazy, if i try to hit them back, i receive a sword slash to my head which knocks me
and by the time i recover, he hit me again, and this is only Vs 1 man, usually i fight 3\4 at once,
which as you may guess results in me, dead...

any tips?

Against only one opponent, you should be able to block and strike without being interrupted, even by a one-handed weapon (unless they thrust, and you swing using a two-hander). Try slashing from the left as you move to the right. That will avoid thrusts, overhead smashes, and side swings from the far side.

Against multiple opponents, though, you're pretty much SOL once two of them fall into step. You can't defend two attacks, recover, and retaliate before the first one hits you again. Not without cheating for 400-some-odd Agility, anyway.

A critical part of combat: hit them before they hit you. One you strike them, you have the upper hand. If they hit you first, back up, then charge in again. And always keep moving. Moving around from side to side, forwards and backwards not only increases your speed bonus (except backpedaling, of course), but it also helps you dodge the odd arrow that comes your way.

One of the most important skills while fighting on foot is Athletics. This skill enables you to move faster thus being able to dodge enemy attacks by moving away, and then strike when you move back. You really don't need a shield either, I use a Sword of War in foot combat, and use my Athletics to avoid damage.

A very high Athletics skill also allows you to have heavy armour and still be able to move fast enough to fight effectively.

However, 10 Athletics, 10 Powerstrike, 30 Agility, 30 Strength, 10 Iron Flesh, Sword of War and heaviest armour does not mean autowin. You still have to practice on how to use the skills. The human element is really present in M&B.

Do NOT run head on and whack like a madman, run from side to side, backwards and forwards, round and round, and whack precisely.

melee combat is rather easy....

Yes, when you're a level 30 something with max power stuffs and maxed out athletics. Fighting a bunch of looters as a looter is very hard.

I recommend getting on a horse and finding a projectile weapon for starters. It's not as easy as melee when you master it, but you won't die as much.

If I'm not mistaken, weapon proficiencies determine how fast all your weapon's movements are, from attacks, to blocks, to time between them. If you have very little skill in a weapon, chances are you'll be lugging that thing around like a tree limb. But if you spend some points in it or train in the arena, etc., it won't take long before you have enough time in between his attacks to hit him.

Nope, athletics give you speed, proficiency in melee weapons only give you damage. That's why starting out as a beginner sucks, even the lowest opponent is your match in terms of how fast they can hit and run.

I always get those two mixed up :???:. Anyways, it's in the description that accompanies agility. Upping your proficiency to absurd levels won't make your character swing any faster.

If you get hit, you must usually block the next attack to avoid being hit again. After you block, counter as soon as possible.

Do the training at the training field to get the hang of this. You should be able to beat a single opponent, even with seriously inferior equipment.

My mistake it seems. I've increased proficiency to ~700 and I do swing faster.
Was going to correct you, beat me to it.
It also increases your accuracy and speed when using a bow as well, although you'd need quite a lot to notice some difference.

Seems to work for me. I got my Polearms skill waaaaaay up and now it's almost instantaneous the hits.

but that do makes it pretty boring. since its basically just cheating

but still..
Ctrl+W in the character menu is the Proficiency cheat.
Just for some of the people who are eager to try it out.

That's what I remember from the manual.  Drawing speed comes from agility I think.
