how to choose which troupes apear and which stay as reinforcements?

I don't know if the question is clear enough ... it got me confused alright!

when you enter the battle you don't have all your troupes and nor the enemy does, what factor makes X unit appear.

How can I choose who to bring first?

The troops higher up in the list have a better chance of showing up first, but it's still random to a degree.
