How to become one of the candidates to get the new fief?

I believe it's random.
I have joined Vlandia, swore my oath and after a week or so, without even participating in ANY battles on my part (neither within army, nor alone), they took some castle and my name appeared as one of the candidates. And even King was supporting me. They gave me the castle just like that...

And I didn't even want it. I was not doing well financially and keeping up the castle wages turned out really hard for me.

The game prioritises clans without lands. So if you're new, chances are you'll get the first thing your faction conquers. After that, it mainly goes by proximity. If you already have a fief, you'll usually be in consideration if the new fief is bordering on existing land you already have. I've observed this effect multiple times and ended up owning half of the former aserai territory

Thanks for clarification. Didn't know that.
It means it's better to wait for some time until you acquire some wealth before joining the faction.

I want to know too! I can't wait till the base game is completely done so all the final mechanics can be torn apart and analyzed up the wazoo.
Seems like a combo of proximity to other fief you own and other clans liking you, but I think they need to have certain amount of influence or they don't vote at all. This is just from a recent khuzait vassal game but mostly it's always Mochug the ruler and Musai (second best clan leader) putting themselves up for everything, no regard to who took it. Sometimes I'll already be up with somebody backing me, sometimes not but I can put myself up but nobody votes for me.
Mochung will pay big (or whatever) for a town and always give it to himslef, always. He's reserved on castles though, I can often get them with just 20 or 60 influence bids. So I have 4 castles but I wanted towns! Towns good castles bad...... actually castles are okay for now but I fear they will un-fix the food any patch now and ruin my game.

Player with no fief may get voted for a castle or a city, I agree to this. But I see that this doesn't apply to other NPC clans in the kingdom.
And I think proximity may not be the sole elements in deciding who become the candidate, because many times, when I have captured a Castle or City,I am not on the candidate list even I am one of the closest clans. However, some other clans which are far away than me are on the candidate list. I just don't understand the mechanism yet at this moment.
And there is one point I want to say, is that, player may get a higher chance to become one of the candidates when most of the other clan's leaders are captured by enemy.

You can build a strategy around it. If you already have a fief, you should keep an eye on the clans in your faction. If any newcomers have nothing, conquer something far away from your own fief so they get it, then drive expansion starting at your initial fief away from the rest of the kingdom to make sure no other clan's territory borders on yours. I had two cities and three or four castles all next to each other when I stopped playing. Say no to bordergore!

In my first sentence, I was saying, some NPC clans with no fief sometimes also don't get elected on the candidate list

That's strange, I've never seen that happen. But it's also like two months since the last time I played so maybe there have been changes since then.
