Simply curious what others experience has been.  In my games I hardly ever see any troops outside of Homesteaders with muskets and the occasional County Militiaman with a shotgun.  Looking through the troop editor it looks like the higher tier troops should have pretty much the whole arsenal at their disposal.

I've never seen an outlaw class use anything other than a revolver/pepperbox...

But I account for this in my overall strategy, use outlaws when I want a high volume of fire up close, US soldiers when I want long range fire.

I think it's a bug that I noticed. If you give troops both pistols and rifles, they'll only ever get pistols. So you have to make pistol and rifle exclusive troops.

Fixed (I hope) in the next patch (top tier outlaw and lawmen get rifles and carbines exclusively)

Odd.. I have troops using pistols and rifles in my own mod..

I think they may choose based on weapon cost/proficiency?

I see what you mean, interesting and somewhat annoying.  I gave looters guarantee_ranged, a pistol and a rifle.  In combat they only had pistols although rarely the rifles did show up as loot.

Could I suggest a split in the troop tree at the top one or two tiers?  Seems a lot of folks like their pistoleros.  Of course that would mean having to come up with more names.  Suppose I could throw out a few-Marksman, Sharpshooter, Sniper, Bushwhacker, Dry Gulcher, Ambusher.  No clue on what Mexican terms for the period would be.

Dain are you using Firearms skill for both pistols and rifles?  In 1866 pistols use Firearms and rifles use Crossbow.

Isn't it possible to add a % to this rule? like 50 % get pistols, 50% get rifles or something?

I think it would be a much better idea, at least past first tier troops, to be able to discriminate between units that use rifles, and units that Use pistols, this directly affects my recruiting of troop strategy, and if they were mixed (IE one form of troop being issued either a rifle or a pistol randomly), I think it would kind of throw things to hell....

Idea... in Native, we have the option to choose between "archers" and "infantry", well, add the two-tier ability into the infantry ranks, and give us a few more diverse options as far as our troops go, perhaps even discriminate the classes down to what kind of rifle they use.  (especially with bandits and homesteader recruitable units, past the first or second tier, give us the option to branch them off as a rifle/shotgun equipped troop, or higher level revolver equipped troop....  My opinion anyway, I don't think it would be too difficult to add a more complex troop tree.

Disclaimer:smile:  I haven't done anything serious with the module system since 0.903 but I haven't noticed any obvious changes to the troops portion.

M&B equips the AI like so.
First you chuck a bunch stuff in their inventory.  Next you modify what types of items you want them to always have with the guarantee_whatever flags. i.e. guarantee_horse, helmet, ranged, etc...  Items without the guarantee flag still have a random chance to be equipped.  i.e. Sea Raiders aren't guaranteed missile weapons which is why not all have bows, axes or javelins.  You can try to influence what specific kinds of item get equipped by adding more of what you want to the inventory.  For example you want mostly spears for troop so their inventory is "spear, spear, spear, axe" in theory you should average out to 3 spearmen for every axeman.  But you could still end up with all spears or even all axes.  You know how random number generators are.

In the specific case of 1866 it's looks to be a bug in the M&B engine.  Pistols are type_pistol and rifles are type_crossbow.  The AI is selecting only type_pistol weapons if it has both types in inventory.
