How much renown do you need to join a claiment?

Not sure of the exact number, but let me put it this way. If you have to ask, then you're not ready. Helping a claimant is one of the most difficult things there are to do in the game (the only one more difficult is taking over the map all on your own), so a character who is ready for the task has accumulated so much renown already that the question becomes irrelevant.

Protip: Screw propping up a claimant until you've gotten in solid with several of the nobles, first. Preferably the more powerful ones. Nice, high relationship scores with the right nobles can do you a world of good when push comes to shove.

'Course, if you're unlucky you still get screwed in who joins you and who doesn't...

Which, considering that you can get up to 50 renown per battle 'round', is really not much.
Don't forget what you have to do to get 50 renown per battle round.

But as the others said you should do this only when you have a good army size and are able to convince at least some lords to your size. As they bring their cities and castle fiefs with them you should concentrate on these lords.

I have to disagree. If you convince a lord to join the rebellion, then he keeps his lands. If you conquer them instead, you get to choose their new owner. If you want to play a cunning machiavellian bastard, you can use the rebellion to conquer most of Calradia for yourself, then give the claimant one measly castle. And then rebel against him and conquer it, making your victory complete.
