Many, many words. Even the most basic knowledge of any language includes many words.

I don't know your language though. Japanese, I guess? If that's true, I've only known words through hearing, and have no knowledge of writing or grammatical structure.

Wulf,

He's chinese I think.
Ah, I have difficulty telling the difference between Japanese and Chinese.
Yes yes, how typical American, can't recognize differences between two languages.

Japanese, I guess?

Chinese. Japanese usually has less 'dense' characters. Less strokes per character.

Edit: ****'s sake, stop ninja-ing.

Actually Japanese kanji IS chinese, so there is no difference just like german, french, and english are the same(if that makes sense). Japanese mostly uses chinese simplified over chinese traditional.
And then of course there's the hiragana and katakana, which is different again and what you two mean.

I know lots of words, no I don't know 单雄信. I just know english, a little german, and japanese.

... German, French, and English are not really that alike.
Would've made more sense to use Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian.

Unless you're meaning they're based on Latin or use essentially the same alphabet, then yes I suppose they're "the same"...

English has roughly 600,000 words. The average native speaker at the age of 40 has a vocabulary of roughly 6%(40,000)

(I don't have a source for this.)

As one would imagine, people who speak multiple languages typically have larger vocabularies, even in their native tongues.

Also, English and German are not based on Latin.

That's not what I said, I was referring to the writing characters they use.

What I said was not necessarily related to what you said.

How do you test how many words a person knows?

Devercia 说:
(I don't have a source for this.)

I imagine you could base it on what words are not found in an abridged dictionary for being too simple, and for those too obscure. Regardless, 40,000 words is far more than enough to sound normal. I do know that 600,000 and 40,000 are reasonable estimates if not factual approximations.

I find it odd that a 40yr old has a vocabulary of only about 2400 words. Then again, I'm sure as **** not writing out a list so maybe you're right.
forget it

Oh ok.

In pre-revolutionary China, didn't you have to know 10,000 characters to be considered literate?

Something I seem to recall from highschool history, could just be making stuff up.
