How many troop should one stationed at a castle and a city?

I have been trying to place about 100 men in each castles, and only 100 at a big city as well since it's just too expensive, I have one city and a castle, I myself travel with only about 60 men, it is now 6k a week for their wages, and beside fighting.

Each of these places do give an amount of money from time to time, but it's not much, I would like to have some advice on how many men do you place in a city and a castle, and what type of unit do you use.

Thank you.

I try to place as many troops in the garrison as it was before I took the city/castle. So about 100 in a castle and more in a city. I have not owned a city in native though, and only a few castles.

I usually place only recruits as garrison because it seems that npcs determine their next place of attack mostly on numbers.
Then I usually place 150-200 in a castle and about 300 (plus my reserve of elites) in a city. The Leadership skill also reduces pay so you might invest points there.

Of course if I want them to attack I garrison one castle with elites (up to 100) and wait for the enemy...

I personally do things as follows:

Castle - 100 or so VERY LOW tier troops (even recruits)
City - 150 troops with only a few High tier, High quantity of archers / crossbowmen

The trick is to tie up any attacking force long enough that my main army can come to reinforce, I never let a castle that I want to keep be attacked by enemies without my character being there in person. The basic principle being that unless my Player Character is actually there, its a lost castle or city. Thus, why bother placing a garrison of expensive troops there. Not once have I ever witnessed a castle or city defend itself with only the NPC troops defending it.

And so placing expensive troops (which I know will only be as effective as cheaper ones if I let them defend on their own) is a waste of money.
My main party is where the action is at, high tier Infantry combat troops with a good number of cavalry and ranged units.
So, when a castle or city of mine is attacked I high tail it over there and whup ass. In this way I have defended sieges of thousands (the most I recall was some CRAAAAAZY party of Khergits about 2000+ strong.) it takes several waves of defence action and timely 'retreats' but its possible to blunt even the largest assault.

Good ideas here.
But I wonder, is it possible to access the lords storage chest after the battle has started ?

Im always running out of arrows and trying to find the odd quiver dropped in battle can be annoying. I carry two large quivers and a mele weapon.

Myself I just fill every castle with hundred top tier units and cities with about two hundred. I could of course use recruits and stop most enemies actually attacking my castles but it's easier to just slaughter all the enemies in a big siege battle instead of using time to separate lords of big armies to handle them one by one with little party. That way I can also get reinforcements any time I want. I have never had any problems with money this way as I get each week the same amount of money I lose back when enemy ransoms some lords I have captured...

As many as you can, bro!

I advise you

120-130 Men in Castles

150-200 Men in Cities

In another mod, i saw that a city has 700 men in it!

In native you can't get to the chest. There is a tweak from TheMageLord that allows you to go into your inventory though (look up his thread) during a siege.

I own 1 city and 3 castles, in the 3 castles I have 50 low tier soldiers split between archers and footmen and for my city I have 120 with around 70 high tier archers and the rest in high tier guards. I usually travel with around 60 in my party and they are all archers lol. I love to turn the skies black and rain pointy death on my enemies hehee

Use recruits and other cheap units to fill up your castle, the AI determines which settlement to attack via the quantity of troops stationed there, they will not take into account the calibre of the troops you station there. Keep in mind they will attack the least defend settlement IE. the one with the least troops.

A good strategy is to garrison the most defensible settlement with a few of your best siege warriors, like elite missile troops like Vaegir archers or Rhodok Sharpshooter ( for their melee capabilities as well). Huscarls and even sergeants work well too. Keep the hard to defend places, like cities and other hard to defend places full of cheat recruits, this will ensure the enemy never attacks unless there are no easier targets than this.

An annoying thing when you own a castle and you don`t have many troops in the garrison is when you get a campaign quest. That's the problem when need to be at the castle in person. usually I ignore the quest because I don`t want loose the castle.

Just place loads of archers/crossbowmen at least 70 and the enemy will be too afraid to attack it, at least they've never attacked my castle since.

Do castle/town garrison troops' pay come out of the weekly wage as well or is that assumed already taken out of the castle/town income?
They get a weekly pay like those in your troop. There is a slight error there because the weekly wages in the troop screen ignore your garrisons though you still have to pay them. If I remember correct there is a fix for that in TheMageLord's tweaks.

I tried this...
They kept coming after my castle even though it had like 500 recruits in it. although I think it was because I had like 10 lords in my dungeon then wanted back. also it felt like it was very personal.

I usually have three castles and two cities, so I have a very big problem in garrisons.... So I do one thing: I garrison 500 troops at cities, and 250 at castles. Then I patroll from castle to town in chance of siege... In Native mod, I conguered all Calradia with 5 towns 600 troops at least, 'n' 7 castles with 300 troops... I suggest you to recruit farmers, and train them at the training ground. But, if you want to finish sooner, tap E and cilck on a troop, then click Ctrl+x in order to give them experience and upgrade them  I used it only once

Hmm ... it's always worked the way Swadius describes in my games. *shrugs*

One trick I'll use is to train up troops I plan to use as garrison to the point where they're ready to level up to the rank at which I want them to be, but then I wait to level them up.  I'll garrison them, and if the castle/town they're guarding gets attacked, I race there with my party and level up the garrison as soon as I arrive, and then defend the castle with them.  This saves a few denars up until that point.

Strange, when I garrison troops they forget that they were capable of leveling up.

Is it really that tough?  =/

Just grab a company of companions and charge in.  High first aid skill + low tactics = a few of your guys charge in, kill some stuff when the defenders sally out, and then get knocked unconscious.  Lay siege and charge in again after that, since first aid will boost them back to health.  Eventually you can whittle their numbers down very effectively.  Once this is done, charge in with your main army and wipe them out.
