I just have one. I like to have just one of a few different units to be like secondary heroes, like the people in a Jurassic Park movie that might make it pretty far but are probably going to die. 
Right now I've got one sword sister, one slave crusher, one hired blade, those kinds of units, in my latest game they all keep living, makes me wish I could promote/upgrade them to "real" heroes!

Think I've collected 4 or 5... But they die like flies. Especially the one time I was knocked out rather soon in the battle and the comp decided it would be funny to kill my 5 sword sister and no other unit...

Why are you "collecting" them? They're not anything special in my opinion. Also, I'm assuming you used cheats. If you didn't then that is just ridiculous.

0. Sword Sisters just take arrows to the head in Native, and have better upgrades in mods.

I'm telling the truth. What I do is attack villagers, collecting around 6-8 most of the time. I use my trainer skill to level them quickly. Keep doing this and your numbers increase slowly.
