How many NPCs under command?

So how many NPCs should a player be  able to command?

It should not be like hundreds as in the singpleplayer game, because we have to take in account that there can be up to 64 players. Just one NPC per player will be 128 combatants on the battlefield.

So I was thinking in a 64 player game like choosing between 2 cavavlry or 4 footmen per player.

BUT 4 MEN PER PLAYER IS LIKE 256 FIGHTER ON FIELD!!!

256 combatants = LAG MUCH!
 
It would be cool if we had a multiplayer mode that let each player outfit and lead their personal squad of bots!  It would fill out the battle size and allow for larger-scale tactics.  The number of players would have to be lowered to prevent lag, though.

That would be cool but as you can see sv5 they allow only 32 players with 5 bots for each factions so why would they make an server like the one your suggesting? (I think it would be reasonable if they allowed you to host your own game with this option but not as an official server.)

You mean because it would require a lot of bots?  Well, in the first place it was just wishful thinking, but it's been stated before that the only limit to the amount of bots we can have in a server is how much lag the players can handle.

i run 800 man matches just fine.

in any case... it'd be an option for certain servers, not all of them. good idea.

lmao you do understand npcs are a tad different then real players correct? You get a little affected by other players pings.
 
i understand that, but i'm not advocating 800 players. i'm saying if you can run 64 players, you can run 200 npc's too.

depends on the players connection now if you were the only one using cable then your connection will improve the other 63 dail up players connections lagginess by a bit but your game play experience will be horrible
