How does the physical copy of Warband work?

I just recently ordered a new physical CD copy of Mount and Blade Warband online, and was wondering how it works. Does the physical copy require Steam? And does the physical copy include a key to register to Steam, because I was hoping to install Warband to my netbook, that doesn't include a CD-drive (and I don't really plan on buying an external one)?

The 'physical copy' provides you with a Steam activation code, I believe on the printed materials. I don't believe the CD included is used much, if at all, as Steam will insist on downloading the copy from itself. You can, in almost all cases, acquire a CD/Serial Key from Steam (after using the activation code) that will allow you to activate the copy of the game downloaded directly from Taleworlds.com if you'd rather not use Steam.
