How do you use gangs?

I’ve cleared some out and gotten a little loot, but what is the bigger purpose of the gangs and conflicts between them? Is there some way to use this for an advantage? I saw in some early videos, during the game's development, that you would be able to place gangs of your own into the streets to do various things for you.

Is there any purpose to defeating gangs, other than as a mission, getting loot, and raising influence with rival gangs?

And how does that play into the diplomacy of your home faction?

I think gangs aren't fully implemented yet. I Think they said previously you could even start your own gang or something

I just use them to farm money in early game. Or to help try to level up the "Lord needs a Tutor" lord.
