How do you not-suck with throwing weapons?

Simple question. Is there a "right" way to use throwing weapons in this game that I haven't discovered yet? They have proven to be absolutely worthless to me every time I tried to use them. Even on a character focused on throwing had no real accuracy or even predictable range with them.

I hear you. Throwing weapons are a bear to use. I have better aim with thrown objects in real life, and my aim is awful.

If I recall correctly it's not until your weapon skill is around 200+ that thrown weapons start to become somewhat accurate -- and at that point, they become lethal. Between their high damage and the benefits of power throw, when they do hit, they tend to finish off whatever they're hitting.

But it's been a long time since I've had a character very proficient at throwing. My current character's got 160+ in throwing, and he still misses by a mile, even when he's near the opponent and I take the time to perfectly centre the aiming reticule. (But have you ever noticed how proficient the AI is at throwing? Damned sea raiders and their head shots!)

i find it to be most accurate when im using the bottom cup of the aiming wheel..

crude diagram.. but inbetween those two periods the smiley face side of the aimer... has most accurate result for me. i would sit here and trey to envision a resemblance of real life arm function to hitting that sweet spot.. but frankly i never gave it any thought and i dont have my coffee yet

hit the dip... its what ive found satisfactory.

Another good thing to do is simply practice against the archery targets that are set up in some scenes. It won't always help you out (because your skill will end up changing throughout the course of playing and where the throwing weapon goes does change in that respect), but at the very least it'll give you a quite decent ability to at least figure out where to aim for the most part.

They take a lot of practice to learn to use them efficiently. In singleplayer you don't really need throwing weapons to defeat the AI; only pick them if you got nothing else better to have in your inventory. Unless you're accustomed to them you'll just play worse because you won't know when to switch to them, and when you do you'll mostly miss. That said, since you sometimes end up with throwing weapons in tournaments it can be worthwhile to obtain some basic skill with them.

In multiplayer you'll see people hitting stuff 50 m away with javelins because they've been playing with throwing weapons a huge number of times (as e.g. nord cav provides free javelins and some people have 2000 h+ playtime). They're useful for infantry to deal with archers and to some extent cavalry. What I wanted to underline here for singleplayer is that you can get very good at handling javelins through practice, if you feel it's worth it even though it's not really needed vs AI.

(Obviously, stats of different weapons vary. Javelins and throwing axes are what you'll want to use. Throwing rocks not so much.)

I have used them very rarely and as far as I can tell they are great against masses of enemies, whereby you can lob them at  a distance and hit something. The main problem for me is lack of ammunition, seeing as if i do use them then i throw them as i close with the enemy allowing you to kill or wound a couple if lucky

Honestly, the only time I see them being used in a conventional playthrough is when you're doing a one handed + shield + lance because you've got that one spare spot, otherwise I've never used them (again, conventionally, not RP) seeing as a bows and xbows are far more effective in a number of ways.

Only pros (like me for an example) can use thrown weapons but the common man is to stupid and lacks basic knowledge to simply press and hold down the left click mouse and let it go

I haven't used them much in singleplayer but I am pretty good with them in Multiplayer.  I can throw javs pretty accurately a far distance like hitting an archer on top of the wall while pushing the siege tower.  To me I don't use the reticule really other then to generally line up.  These distance throws do take good estimation of how far to aim above the reticule but really I think the accuracy has much more to do with getting a consistent timing for the release.    So, less concern about the reticule, more concern about the timing.

I never use throwing/ranged weapons unless I pick them up. I always go infantry but say there is a loaded crossbow I will pick it up, fire then drop it again. Same with throwing stuff only I don't drop it afterwards.

The sole satisfaction of hitting someone in the head with a jarid from afar is better than a 14.0 difficulty headshot with a bow. I've played countless hours of archery, but once I switch to throwing, it's like a whole new thing.  To throw effectively you need to measure the projectile speed of the given throwing weapon and movement of the target. Start of with throwing dagger because it's easy and with lots of ammunition. Once you are able to headshot at 4.0 to 5.0 difficulty with daggers, say 150 prof, it's time to take out the axes.

1 throwing spear or jarid can dehorse a war horse with a headshot and enough Power throw, since if I'm not mistaken, thrown objects gets speed bonus as well.

I totally agree with habeo123 on this, it really is very very satisfactory.

Normally i always play as a lancer. Just recently i started a campaign being an infanterist with a big axe and some jarids.  And using throwing weapons is so much fun! I love it when i hit a knight or mameluke who is destroying my archers and kill him with one hit.

Its not easy, but very much fun. Took me a while to become deadly though. I have played with throwing before, but never really put any points in it. I always just spended like two points in PT. Now i have 6PT and around 275 prof, makes throwing my balanced jarids a lot more deadly.

And about ammo, normally there is plenty lying around at the battle field. In my game, i play with all 16 companions and i gave almost all of them throwing weapons, so they provide me with some spare javs to ^^

A few pointers to improve accuracy.

1. Thrown weapons have very steep ballistic arc. Take it into account and aim above head of targets. There is a reason why AI gets so many headshots with otherwise inaccurate jarids. Indirectly aiming for the head is only way to get any accuracy when throwing at range. Don't bother to aim for body or legs when target is not very close.

2. Zoom in when throwing. It makes the crosshair tighter and greatly enhances accuracy. Switch to first person mode if you can also.

In general once you get decent powethrow, proficiency and some practice thrown weapons are amazing. My Swadian knight carries only 4 Jarids, I kill 30-40 in each battle. Yet the most memorable kills are from those four jarids. Lords, two hander berserks etc tend to get a jarid to the face in the most dramatic moment,
