How do you get started?

How exactly does one start out in this game? You make a character, you start a game, you get a bunch of these cool new troops, but you can't hire any more. My leadership's at 5 and I still can't get enough troops to actually effectively assault a castle on my own, and local lords usually close in to take a bite while I'm sieging. This mod is about the kingdom features, yet I still cannot get there (without cheating heavily).

From what little I know you can't hire more of the guys you have until you have your own castle/town.  Then you can hire peasants and you have to upgrade them using a barracks in the castle.  At first you'll probably need to recruit other unit types to help you take your first castle.

what do you mean?
Go to a village and you can hire peasants. The peasants are part of the mercanary tree. Once you get 100 or so attack a caravan. Then look for battles between your enemy and their enemy (example, swadians and rhodoks) and join in. You might be able to recruit some prisoners (once got 200)
Do this and you should have a good swadian army of about 200 that can take a castle.

Tweaks my friend, tweaks.

Well what i did for my most recent game was take my villanese soldiers and storm a random castle that didnt have a lord in it at the time. I actually managed to take it in the first shot. After that i sold off the gear i got from the fight, traded off the prisoners and put my faction troops on the defensive. I also got myself a knight for keeping my new fort safe.

After that i ran around building a army of mercs, and scrounging the cash for a barracks, Mind you, i was attacked at least 6 times while this was happening so this is not really for the faint of heart. I managed to weather the hatred of the nords long enough to start making my faction infantry. Not long after Thir was mine after about a good two weeks at chipping away at them, and now i am planning on my next move.

My early game strategy:
Talk to your troops straight away and create a regiment, then transfer all your troops into it and put it on follow. Then run around by yourself at great speed and go from city to city collecting companions. Compete in tournaments and do quests for guild masters for money + xp that levels your companions also try to build up a decent force from hiring merc's and peasents, you can transfer extra troops to your regiment, so you can move faster.

Use your companions to develop party skills like pathfinding, tactics, healing skills, looting etc. Alot of people in these forums seem to suggest dumping all points in strength for plate and war bows, I find this difficult to understand? Its best to have 3-4 combat companions and 3-4 skill companions, with redundancy in all crucial skills (wound treatment, pathfinding). I specialise in all the charisma skills + fighting for my hero (trade, leadership etc) so I dont have to raise another companions charisma at all.

After a week or two you want to think about taking a castle. Look for castle's that have been taken by a faction, because they will then leave a minimal garrison there. Also like Jasonx says, look for faction armies with alot of prisoners and attack them, this is one of the best ways of getting troops and you only lose a bit of rep with the faction for attacking an army, so its easy to pay them for peace.

Good idea to look at Magelord's tweaks too, personally I have it so you can repeatedly ask guild masters for different quests + increased chance of ransom for captured lords

This is as far as I've got in my game, Im currently trying to build up enough of a force to take another castle (one thats more heavily garrisoned) but my castle is constantly being attacked

Actually I got a few quick q's for Jasonx (raptor jesus guy) Can you explain again about in sieges- parking force at ramp, killing all their archers on wall then leaving and auto-resolve (I saw something about this in another thread). Does this only work with alot of archers on your side? haven't tried this yet sounds like a good plan.
Also, who/where is the guy you can trade all prisoners to for 250denars? is it the ramun slave trader guy? sounds like it could be useful later on when the prisoners start rolling in
cheers

About sieges: (lots of archers need and BATTLE SIZE 200+
What I basically do is right at the starting I tell everyone to follow me. I walk foward to a good position for my archers and say "wait" and "spread out" I then walk around the edge of the castle with the infantry and tell them to wait. With 150 men around the ladder it s almost impossible... From there on I wait. You should be getting a lot of kills from your archers. After a while most of your archers will stop shooting and enemy kills will be rare. After that press tab and retreat. You should have taken out (from an average castle of 120) 40-60 units and only lost a maximum of 10. You should now out number them 2-1 and a few auto resolves should end the siege. I usually end with 10-15 dead.
To do this you need a LOT of archers and high battle size (400 for me)
I had about 30 swadian sharpshooters, 10 villiianese sharpshooters, 30 swadian elite crossbow men, and about 100 1st tier villianese and swadian archers. Overall I suggest you have AT LEAST 75 archers and AT LEAST 25 sharpshooters. If you are fighting the nords (i am) or rhodoks you should get a TON of swadian prisoners.

I recently sold 180 prisoners for 50000! (I only had 2000 denars and I was freaking out when I saw my castle with 180 prisoners)
In the nord territory there is a town on the coast (It is the town THE FURTHEST TO THE LEFT OWNED BY THE NORDS)
I do not know why it is 250 for me... in the beta I set my txt file to 250 for prisoners... but I deleted that and installed V4. Go to him and see if it is 50 or 250. If it is 50 you can change it to 250, although I read you can not have the prisoner price determined by level and set at 250 which is why I do not know why he buys them for 250. But the txt change is save game compatible.

Cool man
I had a go at doing something like that in a siege against nords and it worked out well, I picked off alot of guys then the nord infantry defenders actually started coming down the ramp after my archers in 2s and 3s  then in a tide (which I've never seen em do b4), so I had to call my infantry back into the fray, all in all much fun was had

The slave trader in Tihr gives out 50 for a prisoner in v4, I've turned up chance of a faction offering ransom from 5% a day to 25% a day, and thats how I get most of my money now (you seem to capture lords a lot easier than in native).

I have another question tho, I've spent about 20mins searching threads and can't find where I saw this explained

- When you give one of your lords a castle, they begin garrisoning troops even tho you didnt build archery range, infantry building etc. i know this ... but what about the other buildings. Aka Is it best to build chapel, blacksmith and all those sorts of upgrades in a castle b4 u hand it over to lord? do bonuses from these buildings keep applying once you hand the castle over (are you even able to further upgrade a castle once its been given to a lord?)

I have just taken my 2nd castle and I want to eventually give it to a lord, but just want to know whether to build stuff first

Thanks

the slave trader in Tihr is a ripoff, unless you aren't worried about money don't use the scammer. Find a ransom broker and he usually pays a lot more. He is a much better, less shady business man.

Pfft, a lot of guys sell for more as slaves. If you're capturing looters and bandits, you'll make more by selling them as galley slaves, same for any of the recruits or conscripts...

I'm using the magelord tweek to make renown give one extra party member per 5 instead of 25.

I don't like using patrols since they are as stupid as lords and will run off from a fight even if combined we outnumber the enemy.
