How do workshops work now?

I bought a brewery in a big city. But I can't seem to supply it anywhere, and it is not running or producing any profit.

How do you "turn it on"? I just assumed it would be more automatic like the older versions. Where do you add raw materials for production? I've talked to all the shop workers in the building but no one has any option to give them supplies for production. Shouldn't they also be able to buy their own supplies or at least have a command to get them to start doing that?

It's all automatic, they supply themselves, give it a few days to see if the workshop you have is profitable, if not, speak to the worker and try and different production type (i.e from wine to smithing). Though changing the production costs 2000 denars.

It's been a couple of weeks and the money from it still says 0. It can't be making 0? Something must be wrong. It's a brewery in a city. Usually one of the most profitable businesses in M&B.
And shouldn't there be some way to add materials for production to increase profit anyway?

Don't you get daily fluctuation at all? What does it say if you hover over your gold on the bottom right of the screen with your mouse?

You need to find cities where grain is abundant (and therefore cheap), and where there are no other breweries making beer, therefore the demand for beer will be high. Then you'll see huge profits.

You can also exploit this by buying grain super cheap at places and selling it to the city your brewery is located in, therefore flooding the market with grain.

Additionally, you can buy out workshops in nearby cities producing beer, and convert them to another profitable business to make your beer in even higher demand.

Just to chip in with some trial and error findings I've had so far in my save:

Smithy & carpentry workshops seem to generally be really profitable (caveat is the latest patch mentioned fixing something to do with these, so may not be the case any more). For the others, even when you feed resources into them I've had some mixed results, not nearly as good as the two above.

I think it takes into account the economy in the city, so profitable things will earn greater profits (also impacted by ongoing wars and stuff, so Smithy earns tonnes potentially), and as mentioned above you can influence this by buying the required goods from other cities, and selling them in the city you own the workshop in. E.g. I bought 200 iron and 400 wood and sold them in the city I have a smith and carpentry workshop in and the profits jumped up.

Income was capped at 200g per workshop, but looks like it's removed again. Also, you can view owned workshops through Clan tab, under other. It shows you the capital per shop (how much profits it's made on top of a starting point of 10k). You can sell your workshop after they've made you enough profit for really large amounts, and then just buy another one - can really help if you have large armies and your monthly income/cost is negative, but you need to remember to do it.

Ok, that makes more sense! I knew there had to be a way to make markets better. I like that mechanic, I just used to give tons of cheap stuff directly to the stores in the old versions. You should sill be able to add to the surplus manually, when you get a hold of cheap grain.

Meanwhile, the money has been going up. It's now bringing in a profit of about 40. Hopefully that goes much higher. I really don't want to change the production, but I guess I could? I heard woodworking shops do really well.

Once I figured out how the markets work and how workshops influenced them, I immediately became 1000% more interested in trading. I almost never exploit the markets in games, but in this one I think I want to create a trade empire. Don't even care if Battania or the Empire paint the map at this point. Just gonna build a huge economy, then I'll seduce lords or something and fight a grand war.

It balances out and fluctuates right now. At first they made like 300k a day now they make around 200 gold a day. Guess it just needed economy to stabilize.

They nerfed the smitty so hard that it never makes 200 gold a day under the best of circumstances. I have mine in a city with iron and hardwood producing towns that are controlled by it.

I actually tried a carpentry shop first as the city market is always awash in wood. It was making hardly any money and that is why I changed it.

They hit smitties and carpentry shops too damn hard with the nerf bat. Now they seem to make less than the 200 gold cap they had before. If there was fire insurance in the game I would set fire to the smitty and collect the insurance money. It seems like that would be the only way to get my money out of it.
