How do I start a siege?

Hi-

I'm totally new to Mount and Blade, and I'm wondering if there are any requirements as to how many soldiers are required/engineering XP/renown etc. before you're allowed to besiege an enemy castle/town? My character is level 25, about 350 renown, about 70 in my party, engineering at 4, and my faction is at war with the Swadians, but I'm unable to start a siege on any of their castles/towns. I can join in a siege battle that has already started, but oftentimes I end up having to sit there waiting for other nobles to actually start the battle (which they sometimes never get around to). When I click on the enemy castle/town, there is no option to start a siege. Do I just have to wait until I get more renown? More soldiers? Do I have to be the marshall of my faction? Higher engineering?

When some lords already lay siege to a castle you can't besiege it yourself, you can only join them when they finally storm the walls.
You can lay siege to another castle but then other lords won't help you unless you are the marshal of your faction.

It is possible to storm a castle with 70 soldiers but it depends on their type and the type of the defending troops.

You sure you have a - rep with swadia? The option SHOULD be there if they hate you and you got enough soldiers...

(Engineering only affects the time it takes to build ladders/siege tower, not whether or not you can besiege).
Attack some Swadians (caravans or whatever) and you'll have negative relations with them. That should help.
