How do I get enough renown and how are fief election candidates chosen?

Hello, I have two questions:

1. How do I get renown quickly? I win battles, but I always get a small amount of it. Even fighting with other kingdom's big armies I get get more renown but still a low amount. Do I have to grind it defeating bandits?
2. How are fief election candidates chosen? I've tried to propose a new owner for a city, but I didn't appear in the list.

They pick the lords that already have the most property. They pick lords that are favored by the king. They pick lords that ARE NOT YOU.
