couldn't find this posted anywhere... I got the quest, how exactly do I go about completing it? Do I walk around the streets or just wait at the city until the spy leaves?

When you leave the town... if you watch closely, you'll see a glimpse of a leaving (blue text) party... go in that direction.  You may have to scout around a bit, but you'll run into two parties together (again blue text).  Attack both, one after the other... and only use blunt weapons.  The king want's them alive.

You can also use your tracking skill.. or that of any of your companions... to follow the a track made by 1 person leaving whatever town you are in. The destination can be very close by (very close, within 1hour game time) or it can be a very long way (16+ hours game time) you need to follow/track... it is random and the destination will be a stationary group of blue-ish 9+1 people on horseback (1 "ordinary townsman", 1 other person and 8 caravan guards).

Oh yes, as mentioned below... you need blunt weapons to capture both the townsman and the person he is meeting alive... the caravan guards are expendable. The rewards are very good and the quest is usually quite simple if you have tracking.

Good luck!

Edited for spelling and clarity.

When you exit the throne room you return to the map. If you are observant enough you will notice a single rider (in quest blue) leave the city while you are unable to do anything for a short time (so he gets a head start).
If you noticed the direction he went you can follow him, otherwise you need the Tracking skill. When you follow him you have to stay behind him a bit, should he notice you he will enter the nearest village and vanish there. When he meets his contact you have to attack and capture both him and the contact, the mercenaries are unimportant.

This quest is easy to fail, to follow him you need to be fast enough and you need troops with blunt weapons and so on.
If you think you are not up to it it's better to decline that quest.

I believe you have like a month or so to complete the mission so theres no hurry. Whether you saw the spy or not you can still complete the mission by just scouting the map intill you find him. Knowing which direction he went in does make it easier though. I never manage to follow the spy but I have always completed the quest.

I guess it's impossible to control this, as turning down the quest makes it inaccessible, but be careful about taking this quest just as it begins to get dark.

Tracking is obviously more difficult in the dark, and the only time I've had trouble with this so far is when I took it after dark.

:?: Is it possible for one of the groups to evade you by hiding in a village?  I was following one group after finding and breaking up the meeting, and it appeared that the group went into a village and disappeared.

I was under the imppresion that they only run to a nearby village if you are following to closely. Best to let them reach their destination before you get close. If they do disappear in a village then they are gone for good. But personnally I have never followed them so I have never seen them try to run to a village. I just look around intill I find them and they just stand there when I do find them.

It is always a twofold fight though, for me, as at first there is only one person visible and after I defeat them then the other person shows up on the map in the same location and so I attack them as well. This is how it has always occured for me.

wait for the spy to leave the city
NOTE: tracking will help... but if you dont have any tracking you f***ed so i suggest you use this cheat IF YOU WANT
all parties and fief info shown- Ctrl T

when you fight the spy and his "leader" you need to make sure not to kill the ones that are pretty much in different clothing than the caravan guards....
NOTE: this is hard because your men might not have blunt weapons and might kills the spy and leader.....
knockout all enemy troops- Ctrl Shift F4

Tracking is absolutely essential in this quest, and if you can knock out both of the people in question, you'll get a nice 2000 denar reward.

Don't your troops use their fists to knock out opponents if you order them to use blunt weapons and they have none?  I thought I saw that in the game manual somewhere.

Haven't used it but if you press backspace to bring up the map in the middle of a battle there's an option to tell everyone to use blunt weapons.

The first time I undertook this quest I gave up and couldn't find him.  About 4 game days later I was chasing down a group of enemies and stumbled across the spy in the meeting.  Was a nice little moment for me.

My troops did nothing when ordered to use blunt weapons. They stood in place. I was surprised, but got through the mission.

never happened to me my archers kept on shotting their arrows, my swordsmen, axemenand pikemen kept on using their weaponry never a blunt weapon

When ordered to use blunt weapons, my cavalry usually stand still and do nothing unless they have a blunt weapon. Foot soldiers and archers who lack blunt weapons put away their weapons and use their fists.

That's what happened to me when I completed this quest anyway.
