How do i couch a lance?

Users who are viewing this thread

I've seen this in videos, and read about it alot, but i have no idea how to do it.

It's not in the controls menu.. So I'm kind of confused, is it a mod thing?

Get a horse, a polearm, and go to some looters. Now ride forward at full speed,  do not press anything, and you will notice the lance lowering, which means it's ready to go into someone. Guide the tip of the lance into someone, and it will transfer all of your weight behind that little point, causing you to do BAJILLIONS of damage. A couch lance usually kills in 1 shot, but it can leave you very exposed.

It does take some practice to line it up properly, so as Mabons said, practice on looters. Once you get the hang of it, try it on better troops such as sea raiders. I recommend going for a Balanced Jousting lance as it does decent damage, has the longest reach of any couch-able polearm in native, and blunt damage is a bonus, means lots of juicy prisoners to sell

I recommend using it in conjunction with a shield. Archers are a pain, they always seem to hit you just as you are approaching with your lance couched. I suggest keeping the shield up until you're about 10 metres away (if you feel confident, hold it up longer, so the lance goes down again just intime for hitting the enemy), then it minimises the chance of projectiles hitting you and ruining your charge.

Well, you can aim a bit. The lance points in the level you look, so you will have to aim at the rider if you want to unman the horse instead of unhorse the man

I find that when you couch lance the backs of horses you don't lift the lance up you can go straight onto a different enemy. Useful if you're facing load of horsemen so you can unmount them all in a short time

hmm, i might try that! (at war w/ khergits)

anyways, when facing swadian knights....or whoever else has a lance, be sure you get them before they get you!

fighting knights/lancers in Warband should be interesting

Couched lances can be deadly. The other day i got killed by a mountain bandit. It was near the beginning of the game, it was me and around 20 Swadian militia/footmen/men at arms against around 29 mountain bandits. I only had a Byrne, so i wasn't too well protected. I charged a mountain bandit, but his lance hit me (i only had a nordic sword, no lance), i took 56 damage

They don't need much practice, thrusting your lance properly takes more practice, but is less deadly.
When you have a new character, you should get a horse (doesn't matter which one) and a lance (often very cheap). Then go kill some sea raiders and sell their armour etc... works fine to level up quickly.

Agreed. With the help of a friend I advanced very quickly in the world of Calridia using this method... I now have a level 35 knight that has restored all the claments to their throne and backstabbed them all.

When you go couched lance you should always use the balanced jousting lance since its the longest. This means you can outlance any enemy lanceunit (apart from in tournaments where other units use joustinglance). If you hit right when normal attacking with the lance you can also achieve some sick damage, but its really hard! The outstretched arm plus jousting lance is REALLY long, but if you hit the enemy at the right point (IE when its around 99% stretched out) you can KO almost any enemy, I've had around 250% speedbonus when normal attacking, and this means hefty damage, however, I use couched lance far more often then normal attacking, sometimes my brain says "normal attack" and I sort of do it on pure reflex when I see an opening.

Using polearms are also usefull in other ways! When you try to sneak in to an enemy town and get caught, you use a wooden stick (and throwing daggers), so its no problem knocking them out : )

Can scythes be couched? I was using one in my new Khergit game and it looked sweet!
no the scythes are considerd 2hand, only polearm can couch lance.

also 2 other tips but you probably figured that one out yourself.

1. the longest lance is the best not the one with the highest attack since couched lance does not really focusses on that but sheer speed.
2. if you charge for someone who also has a lance defence yourself with your shield or weapon unless your sure you can hit him or your lance is bigger then hes.

Edit:
Like AWdeV said. scythes are polearm shortend militairy scyths are 2 hander.
i forgot to mention the diffrence.

Scythes are polearms, so yes. Military scythes are polearms, so yes. SHORTENED military scythes are two-handed weapons, so no.
