How do I assign companions to army battle groups ?

How do I assign companions to groups in my army before a battle, when the screen comes up showing which group each companion will command, all are locked !! I cannot move anyone ! ??

I'm sic and tired of having my people KILLED in battle because they are in the vanguard. I NEED to place them in a reserve group to keep them safe .

The companions I'm referring to are the ones controlling their own Party (army), that join my party when I create an army.

Nope, just locked. They are adding that with the order of battle feature.
