how do companions determine which armor to use?

oops.....should be how.  just wondering if its by price or by actual stats cause there are some weaker armors that cost more.  not sure if that intentional or not more likely bugs not fixed yet.

I used the autoloot feature but when 2 of my party members took of their armor and another 2 changed their better gear for some sh1t I stoped using autoloot as I can spend 1minute for handpicking rather than respecing all their gear again.

must be by price then.  i noticed a couple of armors that were priced wrong cause they were really expensive but offered only moderate protection.
