How big is your army?

Right now I am lvl 22 (I think) and I am rolling with 68 troops.  I have a mix of archers, a few infantry and some cavalry.  (By the way, one of the things I love about this mod is the unit cost.  It's almost impossible to roll with all top tier units).  I don't have a problem with most roaming army's on the map however I have come to the conclusion after trying to take a castle that I probably need to expand because the garrison size of castles have also increased (Which I also love).  How big of a army do you folks generally roll with?

I am at LvL 42, My army is over 300 troops, most of them garrisoned, i have around 25-40 troops in my party, not much more or less than that. My renown in close to 5000, so i can have over 250 in my party, but i see no need for it. I only use elite troops, so i don't need a huge party.

I just started but I imported a character that I used in another mod (level 32 I think?). My level is no indication of course. I can carry 78 troops total and I went around and hired a bit and I have 70+ in my army right now.

I noticed that battles are much harder here too. With my imported character's cash I was able to get some decent equipment but the sheer numbers early on were a shock for me, and I found myself getting beaten by what I thought were common bandits.

Luckily I'm a wuss and I let myself quit without saving.

But that's why I felt the need to gather as many troops as my army can hold, cuz I got traumatized by an early defeat.

I have a average army of about 40, full of Valkyrie, and one Lady Valkyrie (Hell a long time to get.)
I don't have to worry about upkeep because I make long raiding trips and just sell the loot back to my enemies towns,
I don't have problems with professional armies up to 100 either.

I roll around with ~50 high-tier soldiers, plus ~250 militia.

Pads the army so I'm never outnumbered 10:1 at minimal cost, militia's wage is 1/week.

My castles and cities get garrisons of 200-300 militia.

Now that I've had more time and experience in this mod, I can give a better number cuz I've had a feel for some of the various troops. I'd say my core group, aside from my companions, would be around 40-60. I get a lot of farmers from the various bandits and turn them into Pendor Foot Knights (it's not very hard) or archers hoping for Pendor Gray Archers. Sometimes they die before ever becoming respectable archers, though. I also rescued 6 Noldor Rangers and 2 Noldor Elf Scouts from some Jatu Raiders. I have some of the Empire heavy infantry types (including Gladiators and Immortals). I rescued those from an enemy lord too.

All in all I have a medium-sized army largely of infantry and archery.

I just finished the mod (love it), on easy difficulty, I'm fairly new to Mount and Blade. So I'll throw in what I experienced for laughs, criticism or just to show possibilities. I went heavily into trading at first, after being captured a couple times, since this forum forewarned armies would be expensive. Oil,furs, iron, wool, tools, spice and especially SALT built up my finances. Then off to train up more Valkyries. Usually in mid to late game ran with 8-10 Valkyries,4-7 Lady Valkyries, 15 Noldor Rangers and 2-5 Noldor Knights. Usually on one round of the map at least one of the Valkyries would upgrade, they were getting in so many kills quickly.A very fun party to play, capable against most enemies except the big outsider armies, lots of wild action and now I can actually hit consistently from horseback at full speed with a saber.I really lucked out on the first 3 places my tight-fisted (Empire) king awarded me, Kennet Castle, AVENDOR and SARLEON. Mutually supporting so I got away with small garrisons that could increase quickly by stripping the other 2 if needed, and right in the center of the map. Ideal bases of operation.I didn't find the Lady Valkyries as hard to train as some have reported, I had 21 in garrison at end and had lost probably as many in the course of many, many hours play. The smaller the party I ran, the faster I could train up Valkyries, they were getting lots of kills. Also by prisoner rescue had maybe 20 Grey archers (never used),57 Noldor Rangers,37 Noldor Scouts, 23 Noldor Knights, all in garrison at end in Kennet Castle.Only had 3 cities,Izmir was the other, 4 castles and 7 villages. Had to raise big armies to assault cities, but the expense forced me to disband a lot, money was a constant problem as warned. The only trader I found that had a lot of cash didn't have any inventory room to buy, and I was too stupid to buy up some of his cheap stuff to make room to sell my expensive loot.

All of this probably shows how inexperienced I am, but I sure had fun, and learned a lot. Greatly looking forward to replaying and putting into practice "lessons learned". Next time, I'll concentrate even more on the financial, and to assault or defend cities and castles I sure don't want to waste any of those hard won or rescued elite troops that I use for traveling and fighting in the field. I about cried when I lost 2 Noldor Knight defending in a siege.Ditto with the Lady Valkyries.I only used the Ravenstern Rangers a couple times, they're good, but too many horses was getting in my way, "Hey,I want to kill something, too, you guys are all leaving me with nothing to fight".
