how about giving the archer a dagger? (tournaments)

you're completely assed out when you're the archer (on foot) during tournaments, imo he should have a small backup weapon.  a dagger is perfect in this case because it's not a powerful weapon, but sure beats fighting with fists.  how about it?
 
In the mod I play (Prophesy of Pendor) the archers and lancers are given a basic club in case you don't like your weapon. I'm not sure whether this is a good idea or not. Tournaments are supposed to be a complete test of your skills. Well I think so anyway.
 
Actually you've got the upper hand in tournaments if you wield the bow. Especially if it's 1 on 1, if the guy has no shield you can drop him before he can get even close. If he has shield you can just shoot in the head.

If your achery skill is lower you must wait till the enemy comes close and opens his block to hit ya, then you can quickly loose a shaft to his head. Works everytime and works for charging knight as well :razz:

Yes but see, this does not work if you have a low archery skill, AND you are facing multiple enemies.
 
Even with my 300+ archery skill of my recent character, I was still dropped by that bastard Dranton when he got too close...

The crossbow warriors get a sword in arena, and so should the archers...
 
I really never had trouble when equipped with a bow against someone with a sword+shield...

If it's a semi-large battle, I usually find at least ONE dropped weapon I can use.
If it's 2 vs 2 (vs 2), I use the other guy as a meatshield. I usually can nab another weapon/horse or at least reduce the numbers to a 1vs1 by then.
If it's one-on-one, I just wait for him to get close, then plug him between the eyes when he lowers his shield.

But then again, I always prioritize athletics, makes it much easier to avoid enemies; and I can even play matador with lancers and mounted melee enemies.

You could always just mod the mission_template.txt files and give archers melee weapons.
All you have to do is search for the top set of numbers, and replace them with the bottom set.
The "5" is the item ID # for a practice sword, so you can make a weak blunt weapon and replace the 5 with that number instead.

yeah, i wasn't able to outrun the sword wielding guys because my athletics was low.  i'll have to prioritize that next time.

blaze, could you tell me how to edit that to give archers a dagger?  thnx.
 
actually i forgot that tournament weapons are blunt and shouldn't be cutting or piercing.  so i guess instead of dagger, maybe a basic club should be given.
 
Yeah, I would say give archers like a wooden club, that is reasonable. They can defend themselves but won't be as effective as a shield/sword weilder.

You forgot to change the 3 to a 4.

Also, the previous lines don't include archers on horses. I figured you wouldn't need a sword if you have a horse.

Edit: Oh silly me, I've been giving you instructions on changing equipment on MELEE FIGHTS, not tournaments *facepalm*.
There's a script that sets tournament equipment depending on the city you're in, I can't seem to isolate which part. My bad.
 
yeah is it so wrong to have at least one melee weapon for the archers?

Shooting in the head is a bit tricksy at some times with a shield up, just go for the feet,
