I recently, played through the game and married into Swadian family for Right to Rule. However, later my own family members attacked me when Swadia went to war against my own kingdom. The Marriage was pretty much meaningless at that point. There should be more politics or options available if you marry into a family, where 1) they don't attack you if they like you. 2) Provide unexpected assistance, etc.

Wife's family's kingdom declares war on Player Characters kingdom!

Wife: "Daddy, could you please not join in with the attacks on my husband?"

Daddy: "Why certianly, lowly woman. I shall publicly disobey my lord and master, though I risk epic wrath of epic wrath-i-ness. It is but a simple matter to be taken lightly. I am not absolutely terrified that every other lord, and the king, may flood my gates with hundreds of thousands of their warriors. "

Hehe, it certainly is a complicated test of loyalties. Perhaps something could be done though. What if, when Swadia declared war on you, there was a chance of your wife and perhaps some of her family defecting to your faction, depending on how strong your relations were with her and the family members doing the defecting. Another idea; if you had a battle with your father/brother-in-law and lost, perhaps they might let you and some of your army go free as recognition of your family ties.

Well, there is already the option of pulling out of a battle if somebody who likes you attacks. Any further restrictions on family attacking you should be reciprocal (for instance if your father-in-law won't attack a city with his daughter in it, you shouldn't be able to attack a city with your mother-in-law in it, which would make things difficult when taking the last city of an enemy).

The player shoulden't ever be restricted, it should always be based on choice.

Maybe if you attack a site that a member of your wife's family owns, you take a major relations hit.
