My general rules, subject to change depending upon how bored I am
- all my units, cavalry included must dismount before battle to join the shield wall, cavalry wasn't particularly widely used, and I just prefer shield walls.
- Have a vague mission in mind at the beginning but allow it evolve organically
- Warband should fit my aim, if I'm playing a ruthless mercenary, I'll have all nationalities, if I'm playing a Briton trying to unite the british against the angles and saxons i'll only have Britons.
- Specialize, no uber archer-swordsman javelin thrower types.
- all names must fit the time period and location I start in.
- "if you can't win run away and live again to fight another day." also known as "throw your men at the enemy and sneak away while they all die horrible painful deaths"
Honour is for fools
. Unless your playing an honourable type, in which case, TO THE LAST MAN
- Play battles in first person and act like a leader, not a blood thirsty warrior. Your the warlord, while you have to show your presence at the front you should NOT be throwing your life away needlessly, you should only get involved where you are truly needed, and direct your men in other cases, no taking ridiculous risks unless that's something your character is supposed to do.
- if your the aggressor in a battle, actually advance. Don't just sit there and let the AI come to you, Meet them in the field! (if your the defender then staying in one place is fair game)
That's all i can think of right now, i'm sure I have more though
