Hosting a Dedicated Server Guide

The steam version of the game is the same as the normal game, so there should be no differences between the normal cd version or steam.

I wouldn't know why you can't find your own server.
If others can and can play on it, then it is pretty much a problem at your end..
I would suggest looking into router problems, or even reinstall your computer. There could be so many things that is wrong....

Edit: Do you know if Steam causes issues for finding servers? I couldn't see my server yesterday, but 20 people had joined it. Today, on the Steam version, I can't see it and nobody is joining it. Thoughts?

Your server should be listed under LAN, even though others find it in the internet list.

It's hosted on a remote server, not my PC though. Two days ago I was hosting a 1.127 server and 20 people joined it, now that it's 1.131 only 2 or 3 people joined it, should that worry me or is it just a coinkidink?

Edit: I'll try disabling my firewall and try a DMZ thing to see if it's my internet blocking it, I've added loads of firewall exceptions though..

Edit: I set the DMZ to my IP, disabled my windows firewalls and turned off Avast. It still didn't show up in the list

Edit: I tried iptables -A OUTPUT -p udp --source-port 7240:7245 -j ACCEPT but that didn't show any confirmation message so it's probably wrong, and iptables -l give me iptables v1.4.2: Unknown arg `(null).

iptables -A INPUT -p udp --destination-port 7240:7245 -j ACCEPT also showed no confirmation.

-Other people seem to be able to join, just not me :\
19:22:41 - Darkrust has joined the game with ID: 129244
19:22:49 - Drahkir has joined the game with ID: 130356
19:23:07 - Surithion has joined the game with ID: 131494
19:23:47 - Alzender has joined the game with ID: 123300

Edit: It seems I can host and see with the module Finland At WW2

Hi
Simply put, dedicated server hosting simply means taking an entire web server on rent from your hosting service provider. This is different from shared server hosting, where a number of clients are hooked to the same server and share the resources of the server jointly.

Does anybody know if its possible to rotate your dedicated server maps (say, after 1 round) and factions - randomly or prescripted?

You add your map rotation in the config file like this:

set_map <FirstMap>
add_map <NextMap>
add_map <NextMap>

and so on..

the server will go through each map and when reaching the end go back to the top.

Thanks Vincenzo! If i may another question...
AFAIK, there are 2 types of bans on dedicated servers - through votes and by admin. Admin can remove his bans through log file, but what about vote-ban? This ban can only be removed when some time passes...?

Yes indeed greenz, A vote ban lasts 60 minutes.
(not like 30 minutes that some people keep saying.)

You can't remove these.

Also if you admin ban someone and remove his ID from the banlist, the person is still banned for 60 minutes just like the vote bans.

So wait (yeah im new at this server stuff) if I use Jestservers.com it will still take up alot of my cpu ??

No, This is about hosting it at your pc, if your just a player you don't have to worry about this stuff.

I have my server up on my local network, but I can't see it on the server list.  I am currently using Windows 7.  What's the problem?

Yeah I can only see it on LAN, tried just about everything now. It works and I can connect, but I can't see it on the net and haven't got anyone joining yet. When I run port checker it says the port is open but that it wasn't able to ping the router. Not sure what that means.

Edit: It apparently works! Woo

Does not work for me. Can't see my server at all.
I also run the port checker and it says that my port doesn't work.
By the way, I am using Norton Internet Security.

Can you ban/kick though the logs without being ingame?
Yep, you need to find the offending players ID through the logs then add his ID to the ban list. Note that comments can be made in the ban list by using a

#
.  Anything after the '#' will be considered a comment until there's a line break. It's usefule for commenting out bans you repeal, but leaving them there just in case the person is still banworthy.

I have a question about my server not showing up as well. I have removed my router from the line and its just my modem to my PC. I took the firewall off on the modem, and forwarded the correct range of ports. I turned off my firewall, and put the exceptions in for the program/ports in my anti-virus. I am not sure what to do next.

I don't see it on my LAN games or in the internet list. Is there anything i am over looking? What is next? Should I try another port(s)?

EDIT: i changed the ports and still nothing. Not showing in LAN servers or anything.

Thank you very much for this guide Vincenzo, it helped me a great deal.

Thank you for your excillent guide! I've managed to get my server up and running, it shows up on the internet list and I can log in, however as soon as I choose a faction I get kicked and recieve the message "Connection to server lost".

I am running a custom mod Age of False Innocence. It has 10 factions instead of natives 6 so I modified the text file to show this, but I still have this problem. What else should I look at to modify? Here is my text doc. currently:

EDIT: that had nothing to do with the problem at all, I spent 1-2 hours trying to fix it and now realise I just had to logon from the Local Area Network page and not from the Internet page.
