Horses should not be in inventory

Thats it. I think horses should not be placed in inventory, like other itens.

The inventory is supposed to carry cargo, and a horse is not a cargo, horses carry cargo. So, if you have more horses, you should be able to carry more cargo. But instead, having a lot of horses acctually decreases your cargo capacity since horses take inventory space.

The current inventory system dont make much sense and is not very suited to trading at all. I suggest a new "Caravan" pannel where you would put party cargo (like ale, wool, and stuff, but not weapons and armor, which should be in the regular inventory). The size of this "Caravan" inventory would be based on how many horses you got (and maybe wagons too). And maybe the amount of horses/wagons the player is allowed to have could be based on a new skill, like "Caravan Management" or something like that, which would replace the "Inventory Management".

This way players would be able to play like caravan masters if they want, making huge caravans, carrying loads of cargo and stuff. The way trading and cargo is handled now doest not really allow player caravans.

What do you guys think?

Perhaps there could be extra horse boxes on the inventory screen like there are food and weapon boxes?

Elias_Malucois right. I've suggested that additional horses would actually increase our inventory space rather than taking up inventory space.

I understand that it is more of a convenient work-around that we place them in inventory now, but I think his suggestion is worth considering and is quite sensible.

(Sorry, Elias_Maluco, my recommendation is actually the "kiss of death" and I'd be surprised if anyone else looked at this thread after me. I'm a notorious thread-killer)

Actually, horses aren't smart animals, so they wont help you with your inventory management skill. They need to be "inventored" and taken care as other stuff as well (well more so).

Just wondering ... where do we put our spare horses, then?

We could have horse and waggon boxes in that "Caravan Inventory" I suggested. This inventory could have some slots for horses and waggon (how many would be determined by your "Caravan Management" skill) and slot for cargo (determined by how many horses and waggons you have).

I hope not, I would really like to see some improvement in the trading part of the game. But hey, you could have waited a little longer before you kiss my topic to death.

??

I really dont understand what you are talking about. Perhaps you dint understood what I was suggesting? Or perhaps you are joking?

If things change completely I guess it is ok. I realize that you talked about new skill, but think that they are hard to code or something. So just adding inventory slots with new horses would kill the inventory management (which I know you would delete and replace it). I fear it is not going to happen. (After reading my post I thought it was weird too).

I believe the extra inventory slots represent how much more junk you can drag around now that you have another horse/wagon to pile it on.

How about this? You give each character a few extra horse slots (One or two) in addition to the one he's riding and each horse, according to its type (Charger gives the most, sumpter horse the least), gives some inventory slots. Then we replace the inventory management skill (Which makes no sense to me, anyway) with a horse tending skill, each level of which supplies one extra horse slot. What do you think?

Like i once said before, inventory management should be replaced by horse management. Each horse adds 3 slots to the inventory (sumpter could add 6) and the maximum number of horses you can keep is determined by the 'horse management skill' that replaces inventory management.

Good post I like some of the ideas here.

Ingolifs' idea about horse management sounds good and realistically simple to implement - but IMO it should extend to more than horses - why not have your crew, wagons, mule trains and slave trains there as well? They can all carry goods.

Which leads me on to the whole inventory page. Essentially I think there should be more pages for personal and party management. Possibly navigated by tabs.

Skills tab: This is your skills & stats page pretty much as it is now
Personal tab: This is your armour and weapon + a personal inventory. (You can carry a certain amount of gold here, or carry books, scrolls, maps etc) in pack.
Quests tab: similar to now
Mount tab: This is your horse page - it needs a name. Equip with armour and stores as you see fit and can afford. (buy horse armour as individual items)
Party tab: These are your soldiers and companions. Each should have a name + possibly their own stats too. As you gain experience you more slots appear that you can fill with new soldiers/characters.
Baggage tab: This is where your horses, wagons, mule trains, slaves, equipment and trade goods go.

I think it would be a really great addition to make a clearer connection between party numbers, baggage facilities and the amount of goods can travel with. It should also affect the speed of travel. I accept that at the moment it's all handled by abstraction (size of inventory) but I think more detail would add to the depth of the game.

I'd say it is so that sumpter horses give the most slots and coursers and chargers give the least. Coursers being lightweight and fast and chargers are bred and trained for combat and already carry armor and ****.

I like that idea... it actually makes a lot of sense. Making inventory size depend only on the number of horses would mean you only need money to have a bigger inventory - which in turn could get you more money. Making it depend on a skill only makes it seem unrealistic.
The horse management skill is brilliant, simple and efficient at the same time.

I also like the idea of "horse management" rather than "inventory management," although I think that as you get more human followers, especially heroes, their horse-handling abilities should be counted too, since presumably they would help out with the task while you're on the road.. The current system is kind of illogical, since you can be a single soldier with no horses, and still haul around a thousand pounds of stuff in your inventory. Realistically, a party shouldn't be able to carry more than about 40 pounds for person; a few hundred pounds per horse; and maybe a thousand pounds if you purchase wagons, which in turn should require an unencumbered horse or a few people to pull them along.

sounds like a good use for those prisoners.. instead of selling them as slaves you can use them as slaves (to carry your stuff)

I agree. And I really liked the idea of that Mount tab and a Party tab, too.
