Horses as loot

Why after a battle where I kill around 30 horsemen and only a few horses die do I only get like 2 or 3 horses as loot? Realistically I should get around 20?

Because horses don’t let just anyone grab them, many run off, and others are taken by troops who had their horses slain. The issue with any of these “realistically” assertions is they ignore many other “realistically” counter angles.

For instance: every few weeks you’ll see someone complaining about the amount of recruits that get refueled into towns and villages and how “unrealistic” it is. Yet, they almost all ignore the amount of released prisoners that get discarded, the amount of bodies that get sold to the brokers, the amount of prisoners that never get taken with you (just because you imagine you killed them all doesn’t mean that’s what the droves of merciful nobles also did) etc, etc, etc. And that’s all before you factor in how rare annihilation of an opposing army is “realistically”. There is give and take here.

So since your troops don’t need you to replenish their horses at all once they are upgrade to their current point, it’s a trade off that you don’t get 50% of the horses that the opposing army was using, or whatever percentage someone thinks they ought to get

It would be a nice addition to see such on the win screen. Same as you see if a lord dies.
You lost 15 horses in the battle, 5 became lame.

A mod is seeing the light of day to fix that. Calradian Deserters. Just waiting for stable to check it out.

One can always wonder what happens to the mount when you upgrade a troop.

Okay, fair enough but 10% is a bit low. I posted this after a battle where I killed/captured about 30 horsemen and lost only a few men out of my party, probably only one or two horsemen, so not much to replenish there. I get it to a certain degree, can’t make the game too easy, but the amount of horses gained should have more of a logic system in place. Okay, a few run off, fine, a few get killed fine, a couple are used to replace horses for my men fine, but that still leaves 10-20 horses unaccounted for. I think getting between 15 and 35% of the horses isn’t unreasonable, and that would also depend on how many horsemen you have, since they would be best suited to calming the horses.

It depends on loot score (which can be boosted by roguery). It's not just the actual gear of troops you fight. If you fight a large army you'll get a lot of horses, but not 1 for of of how many were in the battle.

the ammount of horses i got after a run. none of those where bought, all battle loot.
actually there are waaaaaaay too many horses in the game and as loot. i actually have to slaughter to get below herding debuff.

Yes should be one could donate to villages.
Troops should also use noble horses.
Thanks to a mod i often get rid of 50 horses when i create a party.

Yeah I’m shocked that Tier 6 cavalry didn’t start require a noble steed to upgrade once those became as common as they had, but there are lots of odd “horse” related things in game at this stage. Horse towns having you drop off herds of pigs instead of horses, Lords no longer asking for standard steeds (and Aserai not asking for camels of any sort) and there only being one type of camel saddle even though multiple are already programmed in are all oddities that would be nice to have smoothed out.

How about that you update a camelrider without having a single camel in your inventory.
I understand that one is a little silly, but I forgive it as one of those understable categorical things in games. If camels filling a completely different slot was just too complicated, then I’ll just shrug my shoulders. But I still think the Aserai lords would want them all the same for, well, what you need camels for out in sands and scrub and asking for them seemed appropriate. It’s one of those that did happen and now doesn’t.

For me its absurd. Given the number of various horses there are. Sure camels don´t come in such variarity. But still. If one don´t have camels one should not be able to update the troops. Might even be a bug.
It little like where do all the weapons come from when upgrading troops in the middle of nowhere. It would make more sence if upgrading was to happen in a city.

You sure about that? Shield and weapons often match the troops you fight. Reason why i chase down sea bandits to get the faster shield.

Armies have extra horses in the noble inventory. It’s the same reason you get all that food. So army fights give you horses from the cavalry and from the noble inventories

I have not been so fortunate to have this problem. The most I got from a single battle was maybe 5, and that was against almost 100 horsemen.

what can help you on the overall horse problem is the 175 scout perk "beast whisperer" and a little bit more into rougery (~100) to increase the flat loot gain %.

Thank you, I will look into that, although the rougery one might be tricky, as my first play through I’m trying to keep my character as honorable as possible, so no crime. But I know it goes up a little just from ransoming prisoners.

Recruit and lead bandits does enough.

The enemies you fight give you a loot pool for thing you can get in loot, but it's not 1 to 1, you get chances to get loot and more valuable loot is less chance. More enemies defeated *and roguery) increases the loot score and warhorses are kind of in the middle value wise so a big battle will have a lot of chances to get them in loot because of a high loot score.

So in other words to avoid being flooded with noble horses one should not go above 100-125 in roguery. War horses har a use. Noble has no use once they start to flood the inventory.
