horse and carts

This is in a way an extension to the roads topics that I found when i used the search function (yes I really did use it this time!) I want to suggest the use of carriages for merchants. It would require a minimum 2 horses to drive and the speed would depend on the horse type chosen, It would require roads to travel on or speed would decrease greatly, it would be another skill like riding or perhaps would join with riding skill to become "horsemanship" or something. The advantage to this however would be inventory space. A carriage would give the equivalent of 8 inventory management skill extra or something along those lines to compensate for the losses made in terms of speed expense and skill requirements. Perhaps it could be the basis for a new type of defense tactic where by you could dismantle it and drive the wood into the ground so it could be like a mini-fort which you could hold 10 troops in while the other wnt out to keep infantry at bay. This is historically accurate though it was more common in terms of "cowboy and Indian" type scenes than against knights in armour but still I would like any feedback possible. Sorry if it has already been mentioned in road topics and the (trading)carts topic but I feel it was a different topic altogether so deserved its own thread because of the added suggestions to do with fortification and horse dependence.

It's good you used search, however I guess you didn't find a topic on this already made? Oh well, it's not in the stickies for some reason anyways *hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge* It is a good idea though.

I think the whole inventory system should be rethought. Your inventory size should depend entirely on the number of pack horses or carts that you have with you. As of now, you can haul mountains of loot with you even if you're traveling alone with no horses to carry the stuff.

Yeah, the inventory management skill should be dropped entirely. There are alot of good replacement systems that have already suggested, and i like most of them. Perhaps if you had a skill that governed the amount of horses you could have with you at once? (not including the one you ride, or the ones your mounted warriors use) The way it could work is you could use spare horses for two different purposes...travel, and cargo carriers. The horses you designate for travel would be used by your foot soldiers for transport only, not in battle. Those you designate "pack mules" could carry your goods based on both weight and bulk. No more than 12 items and no more than 200 weight per horse (max of 5 trade goods)...or something like that, you get the idea.

hmmm not a bad idea... might require a bit of thought as to which horses used for lugging the cargo though. Also, would it be slow horses who could take the most weight or fast horses or horses with the most charge?[/img]

Currently all horses have the same speed in the world map, so that's really not an issue.

The system really doesn't have to be more complex than this, six new inventory slots appear each time you place a horse into an empty pack horse slot.

I think the most important question is: Do we really need a slot based inventory system? Are there any arguments to justify using it? Do we really have to decide between putting in a barrel of ale and a needle?
Damn, It's the 21th century.

Why being limited to solutions implemented in games before. Why not to give every item (and every container) a volume property.
The inventory would then be a self-adjustable sliding scrollable window with capacity indicator.

The volume stat would not even need to be explicitly listed in item's description, as you intuitively know how much space each item can occupy.

Aye, such a system would definitely be better, but I don't think it's such an important feature that it's absolutely needed for mount&blade 1, maybe the sequel though.

I really like that idea... maybe you could have a certain number of pack horse slots per skill point and if a cart was put into one then it would open up 2 underneath it to make room for the 2 horses to pull which would then open up 18 slots or whatever.
