Somehow the native Hired Blade in Warband got the horse flag checked, and so now when you upgrade it it moves into your cav group automatically, even though it lacks a horse.
I've fixed it for myself, but it's probably real irritating for those who find a top tier mercenary foot unit jogging along behind their cav, vulnerable as hell.
