Hi there everyone.
Im currently working with Armagan on M&B vocals and we're working on providing you with some ingame vocals.

There will be warcries withing M&B, apart from the warcries there will also be things yelled out and I was wondering if the community would like to get involved in
what should be shouted out in the heat of battle...

Some of you may be more learned in the insults of medieval english and was wondering if you felt like contributing to possible things the NPC's will call out to the player
or his followers in the heat of battle and vice versa.

So far I can think of:

DIE...
YOU BASTARD...
DAMN YOU...
YOU SWINE/PIG...

Please discuss in a serious fashion anything you'd like to hear screamed out... Please dont post anything you dont want to hear in M&B :/
You can also agree/disagree with any suggestions so long as you post your reasons.

Thankyou!

Hey, sounds good.  here's a thing:  can you do it so that different factions will say different things? example:  everyone says something when they lose their shield.  But Khergits will curse you by the moon and the stars, vaegirs call you a bastard, and the swadians say ha! Don't need a shield to beat you anyway!

And lets have a 'blue' option that is automatically turned on when you select blood=1.  Blue meaning lots of cursing and swearing, and nothing flowery either.  Check bernard cornwell's
'last kingdom' and 'harlequin' out for how it sounds with modern insults and check dumas or Shakespeare for how it sounds with flowery mediaeval insults.
I frankly wouldn't waste my breath calling an enemy the spawn of a toad unfit to be trodden on by farting camels, I'd just call him a bastard, if I was busily swinging a sword.
And maybe use some german or dutch curses, they have a nice guttural sound.

Maybe the top ranks, like the nobleman, Knights and Sergeants, could go for more flowery insults, as they would have been brought up not to curse or swear.

And can we connect it to morale?  There is something very unsettling about a large body of men charging in silence.  War cries as we all know are meant to put fear into the enemy, but they are also to distract you from your own fear, and attackers who didn't need a war cry were the ones who had no fear of their own.

Peasants should have a general mob-like roar and scream, which would change tone with the tide of battle.
regular/veteran infantry could chant and beat their swords against their shields/stamp spearbutts on the ground.
top grade guards/sergeants could advance in eerie silence.

inquisitors and pilgrims could sing religious dirges as they kill.
in fact, if cavalry are pursuing infantrymen and obviously winning (not sure how the AI recognises this) then they could break into song too, like Cromwell's Ironsides did when they broke Leslie's army at Dunbar.

right, good luck!!

Personally, i'd prefer a number of nondescript grunts, yells, shouts and 'arrgh's'. Along with better sound for pain and death and gasps asn sharp intakes of breath whenever you land an attack or parry a blow.

Also, the battle commands can be given a vocal makeover.

Sounds exciting, I can't wait.

Can we get a "I will pleasure myself in your blood?" No? Ok..how about "My dogs will feast on your marrow, Swadian pigs!" Mmmk...maybe keep it shorter ..."ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"?

Btw, exciting times, can't wait to hear more developments on this, heh heh.

I forgot to mention these must be generic insults no mention of swabians or vagiers at this stage.

@Ingolifs: Grunts/warcries and non scripted stuff is already on my to do list. This is merely addressing insults and curses.. curses must be very light nothing heavy.. bastard being an example of light the s and f word are right out.

Thanks

I think spoken-word insults would be a bad fit for M&B, and I hope Armagan will allow players/modders to disable them...

I'm all in favour of more wordless vocals, though.

Miscellaneously,
Winter

Definitely.  Yells, bellows, cries, rather than vocalizations.  Not that I would mind yells, but only short things like "bastard", "damn", and other monosyllabic or disyllabic insults.  Short and grunting-y.  The verbal insults should be relatively rare.

And the battle commands with vocals would be spectacular.

Waiting in anticipation.

Thats the idea. The insults like you bastard will be short battle yells/screams.. their just for variation in the warcries.

An example of this is Braveheart scene were the english (leutenant?) charges William and William screams you bastard.

It will be done in that fashion...

So yes a prerequisite for the insults will be short and simple.

Now before you judge what is best let it be done first to see if it works in game or not. If it doesnt sound good it wont be ingame and it will be easy to disable weither manually or automatically.

"This one's got good teeth he'll fetch a penny!"

Might be kinda good because slavery or else selling body parts was sort of popular back then.

When making warcries, i hope you make a lot of them. At least 5 different vocals saying "AAAARRGGH!!" and each vocalist saying it 5 times, each time a bit different. I'd like to hear many people shouting "AAAARRGGH!!" when attacking, not just couple voices saying it similarly. Same to other voices. And it would be nice, if every NPC in town would have different voice, (that might be expensive though).

If somebody here in forum has a good sound equipment, can he/she send voices to game, for free perhaps? Of course, not all voices that are sent should be used in game

Most importantly: Please, do not make similar speech like they did in Spellforce! (Boring voice, poor spelling, hardly any emotion, like reading from the paper..)

Would it be possible to add an option to remove cursing from the game when you add vocalizations?

My parents have no problem with me playing M&B, but if it started blaring cuss words out my speakers it'd be uninstalled within seconds.

The unitl controls should be left as they are.
"Archers follow me..."
"Horsemen Charge!"
etc.

Just let the sound go off after you press both buttons.
And in the event of a charge there should be a roar that is generic and inconherent.

We also need attack grunts. Especially overhead attacks should almost always be accompanied with a nice loud "RRRRAAARGH!!"
Thrusts and slashes are cool to go with a "HUMPH!" or a "HNNG!" for effort. Not all the time though. Once in 5 times or so...

I would like to avoid hearing repeating curses in battles. Imagine in a battle of 100 people the word "bastard" will be heard an awful lot of times. It would be nice to keep the english words to a minimum or apply a randomizer that will make these words sound off just once or twice in the duration of a battle.

"HELP!" could be called out when someone is hit for damage, albeit rarely or else the whole battle will be a big yell for help

Are you going to make the battle cries enemy-unit-specific? Such as, your men yell out "Dirty outlaw!" against river pirates and bandits.

Some other ideas:

"You will pay!" (pay, not as in money, but via a beat-down)
"You're mine!"
"See you in hell!"
"Fight coward!"
"Oh no!"
"My leg!"
"My arm!"
"My head!"
"Get them!"
"Push on!"
"Forward men!"
"Never surrender!"

Not seriously:
"My spleen!" (Beavis and Butthead  )
"Whoa horse, WHOAAAAA!!!!" (Yosemite Sam)
"Headshot!"

how about...

"Yo, Punkboy. Over here. I got somthin' for ya..."

it's medeival. kind of. sorta. maw

"Hear me talkin' hillbilly boy?! I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'm gonna git Medieval on your ass."

That's definitely medieval. It even has the very word in it.

But seriously, some battlecries and grunts for the troops, shouted commands for the squad leaders and horn blasts for the main character would suit me fine.

Let's try and keep the language clean. My 3-y/o son loves to watch me play, and my wife would hack my body into tiny pieces if he picked up some language from a game that he shouldn't. Some argh's or Ahhhhhhh!!! or OOOO! (as in surpirse and alarm). Or screaming "For the motherland!" as they charge into battle, that would be cool. Or an option to turn off the foul language, preferably one not easily accessable (like in the config file), at least. Or, spoken commands to your troops, like "Archers! Hold!" when you want them to hold position...now THAT would be cool.

You could always take historical cries, if you wanted to (and didnt mind the problems with the culture clash).

Montjoie and Deus Vult spring immediately to mind, though St. George! was another.  Probably not a good idea, as they are culture-specific, but still, it might be worth looking into more historical idea.s

good for the modders anyway

Not all insults have to be 'bastard'. You could use 'knave' for instance. Or 'Traitor'.
The olf word for coward, that you can sometimes see in Tolkien is 'Craven'.
You could also use 'Sod' or 'Sodomist'.

The word 'swive' is a mediaeval word analogous to '****', but it has since dropped out of common usage. So you could have someone saying "c'mmere, you swiving Bastard!" and no one would know what it means aside from a general impression.
