i just got the game and its great. the intro movie blew me away with these huge awesome battles. but i just discovered that the most you can have in an army are 20 units, so that means most battles are between 500-1000 side at the most. if you look at the ai controlled factions army stacks, they have more then 20 units. wtfbbq!?! are the huge 1000000 man battles only possible in skirmish mode?

I don't have R:TW yet, the game's concept is good and I really enjoyed M:TW, but the whole Roman setting doesn't appeal to me too much. I'm waiting for M:TW II myself. Playing Crusader Kings and Mount & Blade right now. Well, I was 'till I picked up Knights of Honor. Still deciding how much I like it but since I'm still playing...I think I like it enough.

One thing you might want to check is in options - see if there's an option to increase the number of units available in a stack for a battle. Some games allow you to tailor this so a graphically intense game can be scaled for slower computers and the default usually isn't the max. Similiar to the battle size option in M&B actually.

yeah i found the option, but it just increases individual unit size by 50%, and i think you need to start a new campaign gamef for it to take effect, and im in the middle of one already

where did you find that, i also have the game

You can find it in the options area. It might be under something awkward like "audio and visual settings". Glad to see we have so many rome fans here. A veteran of the series myself (Shogun, MTW & bought RTW on the day it came out  .)

If you want my advice pop over to www.twcenter.net and check out the Rome Total Realisim mod (RTR). Version 6.0 will be released in a few weeks and it promises to be awesome. Also clears up much of the many historical errors and bogus units... unless you like that sorta thing.

wow cool , should add lots more replayability, as if the game didnt have enough already. just a question, where do i actually dl the RTR patch or whatever, because a lot of these mods say you need to have RTR installed.

and to change battle sizes, in the main screen when the game starts up, to to options>graphics options>advanced options> unit stack size -- set it to high. have to start a new game for it to take effect though.

Yeah, twcenter has a tons of patches and mods. The Total Chivalry mod sounds intresting as well, but I'd have to reinstall Roma first.

Another TW veteran here. Some of the mods that are coming out for Rome are extraordinarily high-quality stuff. There's an expansion on the way as well.

You can increase the size of units in the game as has been said, but unfortunately graphically impressive, realistic battles with the actual historical numbers (50000 or more men per side etc.) are still in the future. I've gotten it up to a 10000 man conflict (which is pretty good for a medium size battle) but it crushed even the most powerful PC's down to about 5 fps. *sigh*

Technology marches on, though. Maybe the next generation of hardware can do it...

yeah i tryed a 10000 man battle once, and the game wouldent move. try shooting flame ammo with 20 cataphalts at the same time too, your comp explodes.

just wondering, could you upgrade ram to get better perforance in this game? say from 512 to a gig? because i might do it, just to get in the bigger battles.

i got an ati radeon9600 xt. cost me almost 300, so im prob gonna stick wth it for a while. i just wanted some confirmation that increasing ram would increase performance, because somtimes it dosent. depends how the software was made.

I've got a 9600 also. Good card, not top-of-the-line but powerful for the price. Doubleing your ram would have a noticable effect at larger battle sizes I'm sure. How much of an effect I don't know, but I don't doubt you'd notice an improvement.

If u increase the amount of people you can have it slows down the game alot depending on what type of card you have.

There've been reports (with corresponding screenshots) of 28000 men on screen at once at TotalWar.Com's Forums (pub133.ezboard.com/bshoguntotalwar).
And yes, I too am waiting for Europa Barbarorum.
