Help with melee character

Recruit
I got the game about 2 days ago, and i have a lvl 10 archer. When I was about level 4, the typical battle with about 8 river pirates was: Borcha and Marnid get themselves knocked out, and I run away and shoot all 8 of the pirates to death. But with my melee character, I won't have a bow, so after my companions get themselves knocked out, i have to get within range of the enemy's weapons (I probably won't have the money to buy a polearm at low levels.) Any tips?

Buy a shield.
Best thing for you, I think, is a pitchfork. It has good reach/damage for its price, which is ~400, which you can earn in not time at the arena.

thx for the advice, it's certainly a better strategy than rushing in and smacking them with my cudgel.
Also, when i get past the point where i have to kill every single enemy by myself, what kind of horse, shield, and polearm should I get if I want to be a lancer?

Well, two-handed weapons work best with horses - just smack 'em hard while riding past, and they'll not be able to reach you. Warhammer is perfect for that - lotsa slaves too .
Using polearms is tricky. And btw, never buy polehammer - it's worthless.

If you want to be a lancer, buy a lance (pref. double tipped for more damage - they cost almost the same) and a relatively good shield (I used a Thick Nordic Shield before I bought the hardiest shield, the Steel Shield). Don't forget a back-up weapon for close encounters - or a bow for long-ranged battles.

The key to being a lancer is to buy a good horse. Coursers are the best horses money can buy. They're twice or thrice as cheap as a Hunter (the next best thing) and they're very fast (=fastest) and manouverable.

The courser is only replaced by the charger, but one of those will cost you 20,000 gold. Warhorses are absolutely worthless. 10,000 for little improvement in stats / staying power - and you can't even attain charge speed with them (i.e. no Triple damage for using a lance). Don't even bother with them.

If you're going to fight on horseback, your legs will need more protection than your head: most blows will hit you in the legs or the body. So before buying expensive helmets, invest in some good greaves (mail or iron) and body armour that covers your legs as well (like a mail hauberk - heraldic armour is quite cost-effective).

One of my characters is a lancer.
Currently I have him equipped with a lance, reinforced kite shield, black armor, great helm and thick iron boots. as a backup I have a broadsword and some javelins. I use a coarser. But that's after playing for quite a while.
I started out with a boar spear and the shield you get from the constable in zendar. Make sure you have a horse with good speed, thats the first thing you'll want to upgrade. Speed affects riding damage alot.
You'll want a decent shield so you can stop any missiles, and also for those times when you get caught in the masses. Also, make sure you get something that says spear or lance. You can't use a shield with pikes, so unless you're good at dodging arrows and really know how to ride, stick with spears. A good idea for a backup weapon is something with cut or blunt damage. Make sure it is one handed so you can use your shield and also look for something with a good reach, so it will be easier to hit your foes. When it comes to armor make sure you get stuff that does both chest and leg armor, because this is generally where you'll be hit. And of course make sure you get a good pair of boots.
You'll mostly want to upgrade your horse and your spear, because these will increase your damage. As a lancer you don't need to worry as much about defense because you will be riding past your enemies.
As for tactics, ride around clockwise so you can hit guys off your right side, it's just easier that way. Also look for stragglers, because if you get caught in a group you'll probably wind up unconcious.
Hope that helps!

Like I said, get a pitchfork.
Its prolly the lowest damage polarm in the game, but its still a polearm.
You will get your stats up fairly quickly with it, and you can upgrade your way through to the better ones by killing river pirates and such.

ok... now i have a spear, chain hauberk (however u spell it) thick leather boots (i'll get some better ones, thx for the suggestion) and a thick round shield. I have no horse at the moment (see topic about Khergit Raiders  ) but i was using a Hunter. Now I think i'll use a Courser, considering how often horses seem to get killed. Is there anything you can do to protect against your horse turning into shish kebab? Are Warhorses and Chargers less sesceptible to turning into dog food? They sure seem to have a lot of armor on.

Hi nightrunn3r

The armour you see on the horses is just for show at this point. I think horse armor is being added in future versions of the game. The only way to ensure your horse doesn't perish/get crippled is to a) don't die so it doesn't get stolen b) don't get let it get hit so it doesn't get crippled

Basic Universal Tip:
ALWAYS try to hit the enemy from your left, their right.
The AI doesnt seem to be able to reach as far or hit as accuratly from the right, once you get this down the only threat is archers/crossbow guys.
Works for footmen (IE: You) as well.

thx for the advice. I'm a horseman, not a footman (its just my horse got stabbed about 9 million times). But what do you mean, your left, their right? While you're facing each other, or from behind?

Ok, never sit still long enough for your horse to get stabbed.
If you have to, I'm not positive but I believe "heavy" horses can withstand more damage.
In my opinion, stick with coursers and nothing but. I bought a heavy charger once, and it was very fun, but then it got lamed and I got pissed because i spent 25k on it. Stick with coursers, they're fast, fun, and affordable. Hell you can even have multiples in your inventory, so if you lose 1, you have another.
And actually i read horse armour is in effect, only armagan put it in at such a small effect, it seems to be non-existant. It should be fixed in the next version.
and finally, whenever i attack i always point my lance out to the right and hit to hit someone. I rarely take damage and almost always get a kill. Also make sure to wait until you are close to an enemy before drawing back for an attack. This makes sure that they won't block it because they will try to hit you once you hit a certain range and you are not prepared to attack.

when you're hitting them from behind, or head on?

It doesn't matter. Just keep on their right side, so they can't shoot at you. Once you've done some horse archery, you will know that you can't attack anybody on your right side. You can only fire your bow at enemies in front of you, on your left, or behind you. Thus, everybody on your right side are safe, so make sure that you keep on the right side of your enemies, when you're facing enemy horse archers.

If you're a mounted archer, always ride wide, counter-clockwise circles around them. That way you can keep firing at your enemies at all times.

I wonder if this has something to do with old Indian custom of clockwise motion being 'good' and 'counter-clockwise' - bad. (Like if you want to show respect for someone, you circle him clockwise, and vise-versa). Well, I doubt so, but an interesting coincidence nonetheless.

It's purely because it's fecking hard for a right-handed archer to twist his body around to his right on horseback.

Also, my character at the moment uses a double-tipped lance and a war shield, with good chainmail greaves and a hauberk of similar quality. He also carries a balanced broadsword and a mace (in case prisoners need to be taken), and rides a courser.

This works very well for me.

Can someone tell me how to do couched lance damage? Is there a special way to do it or is it just that I can't get enough speed? If I have enough speed and do a normal lance hit (click and release) will it be couched?

High Atheletics is an absolute must for those people who want to get down and dirty.

And NO, yes, NO armor!

Run naked with a massive 2 handed greatsword or axe and SMACK them peons around. Worry not about missile-troops, make sure the enemy's melee is blocking them, and continuously back away so they can't hit you. Most of all, don't forget the good ol' block.

Missile troop NPCs are perfect for this type of fighting. Have them hold position close to where you begin and stay within a medium-visible radius of them so they can support you. Then have them Charge after you have dealt with most of the enemy.

Who needs high Leadership when you can take out 20 enemies by yourself?
